Kontron Launches 886LCD-M/mITX MiniITX Motherboard

1/12/2005 - The 886LCD-M/mITX is based on the popular Intel® Pentium® M processor, part of Intel® CentrinoTM mobile technology. The Intel® 855GME and the Intel® 6300ESB ICH Southbridge, with features including serial ATA, serve as a chipset. In addition to providing the usual interfaces, Kontron also uniquely offers a standard AGP slot on the MiniITX. With the 886LCD-M/mITX, Kontron has once again justified its reputation as a technology leader. Further products from this series will be based on Intel® Pentium® 4 and ULV Intel® Celeron® processors.

The main application areas for this MiniITX motherboard are point-of-sales/point-of-information, gaming and infotainment, measurement technology, lotteries and banking. It also finds use in "classic" applications in industrial PCs or applications requiring sophisticated graphics. Use of Intel® embedded components guarantees an availability of 5 years.

855GME and 6300ESB ICH
Any graphics needs can be met with the Intel® Extreme Graphics 2 integrated into the Intel® 855GME Northbridge and the on-board LVDS transmitter for LCD control and AGP slot. Standard AGP graphics cards or Kontron's ADD LVDS cards can be operated via the AGP slot.

The Intel® 6300ESB ICH Southbridge offer a conventional 32-bit/33-MHz PCI bus as well as the technologically advanced and cost-effective serial ATA interface, USB 2.0 and SoftRAID.

Serial ATA
Besides 2 ATA/100 interfaces, 2 serial ATA/150 IDE controllers have been implemented for the first time ever, creating considerable cost and performance advantages: In comparison with parallel ATA technology, serial ATA offers a point-to-point connection, enabling every connected device to utilize the full bandwidth. In addition, hot plugs, small plugs and standard plugs as well as longer cable solutions are available. CompactFlash Types I and II are optionally available.

Additional features
Apart from incorporating these new technologies, the MiniITX motherboard 886LCD-M/mITX offers functions such as a feature connector with several GPIOs, a watchdog timer and monitoring functions for temperature and fans. The following features are offered:

  • Flatscreen support for 2 independently controlled displays
  • Up to 1 GB of PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM (incl. ECC)
  • 3 x gigabit LAN (optional), 4 x USB 2.0, 4 x RS232, 1 x LPT and 1 x PS/2 for keyboard/mouse
  • 2 x SATA/150, 2 x ATA/100 IDE controller and CompactFlash Types I and II (optional)
  • AC3-, Sound Blaster® 16- and SPDIF-compatible sound card, line-in and microphone terminal
  • 1 x PCI slot for PCI expansion components and 1 x AGP slot for graphics cards

Wide range of processors available
The Socket 478 on the 886LCD-M/mITX motherboard enables use of the 1.6GHz 0.13-micron Intel® Pentium® M or the Intel® Pentium® M based on the new 90-nm technology, depending on requirements. An alternative for the cost-conscious is the Intel® Celeron® M. The cache varies from 512 KB (Intel® Celeron® M) to 2 MB (90-nm Intel® Pentium® M).

About Pentium® M performance
Performance is not just measured in GHz. Intel® Centrino¿ mobile technology¿s 1.6GHz Intel® Pentium® M processor, for example, performs comparably with a 2.4GHz Pentium® 4, but its power consumption is as low as that of an Intel® Pentium® III processor. This results in a better performance-to-power ratio and much lower power dissipation.

About MiniITX
MiniITX is a relatively new motherboard form factor standard, which has quickly gained acceptance among professional users. The size of merely 17 cm x 17 cm (6.7" x 6.7") is the smallest currently available, enabling MiniITX motherboards to fit into extremely compact housings and systems. Kontron¿s 886LCD-M/mITX has a robust design made especially for use in embedded systems and boasts a long-term availability.
