Renesas Unveils High Performance, Low Cost 3V Motor Control Solution

1/7/2005 - Renesas Technology Europe has announced the H8/36087F series, its first high performance, low cost 3V motor control solution. The series is based on the low voltage H8/300H CPU core and offers 18 MHz 3V operation. It features a range of powerful 16-bit timers combined with 56 kbytes of on-chip single supply flash memory that make it ideal for many consumer and industrial applications, particularly motor control.

The H8/36087F family is ideal for applications where low voltage operation and high performance are required. These include digital radios and stereo systems, both in the home and in cars, where 3V operation is typically required as many other components are only available with 3V operation. They also include set-top boxes and low cost modems, as the family's two high speed serial ports and large on-chip SRAM are ideal for applications with large protocol stacks or requiring large communications buffers. The device is also suitable for a variety of toys and games, as the series can easily control a variety of motors and actuators.

The series is pin and functionally compatible with the popular H8/3687 microcontroller. The flash memory can be easily reprogrammed end-of-line without any additional special circuitry, reducing customer inventory and enabling software updates or bug fixes in the field. The high performance 16-bit timer solution is suitable for many different motor control applications, such as brushless DC and induction motors, and is particularly suitable for low cost sensorless devices.

The H8/36087F family incorporates two high speed USARTS, a multi-master I2C interface and up to 4 kbytes of SRAM, making it ideal for many high speed communications applications. An on-chip real-time clock provides a wide variety of time keeping and alarm functions while an eight channel 10-bit A/D converter can be combined with the timer to provide a variety of analogue functions.

Other peripherals for the series include 16-56 kbytes Mask ROM, 3-4 kbytes SRAM, two SCI interfaces, two 8-bit timers, a 14-bit PWM timer, a watchdog timer with independent oscillator, 53 I/O pins and an-chip debug interface. The family is supported by the E7 emulator and is available immediately.
