1/6/2005 - Accelerated Technology(r), a Mentor Graphics division, announced that its Nucleus(r) real-time operating system (RTOS) has been used by Quatech to develop the ThinQ line of wired and wireless serial device servers.
Serial communications are cost-effective, reliable and time-tested protocols for data transfer. They are used in millions of retail, manufacturing, banking and security applications that require serial-based peripheral devices such as bar code scanners, receipt printers, CNC machines, security cameras, scales, automated process equipment and card readers.
Using data efficiently from a stand-alone serial device, however, can be difficult since traditionally the information can only be accessed through a single, physically attached computer. Serial device servers overcome this barrier by IP-enabling the serial device, providing an easy connection to an Ethernet LAN or WAN. The information is then accessible from any computer on the network.
"We had a number of technical and marketing requirements in mind when we began shopping for an RTOS," said David Johnson, product marketing manager, Quatech. "We chose the Nucleus RTOS because of its proven reputation, no-royalties business model and the wide variety of middleware components available. Each of these advantages will help us keep our ThinQ serial device servers one step ahead of the competition."
On the hardware side, Quatech's developers planned to use the Freescale(tm) Semiconductor MPC855T microprocessor and were pleased that the Nucleus RTOS already supported this chip. Quatech was also interested in the add-on capabilities of the Nucleus RTOS, for future products such as SNMP support, PCMCIA extensions and 802.11b wireless technologies.
The Nucleus RTOS supports a number of other feature-rich, middleware components including prototyping tools, a complete TCP/IP protocol stack, embedded Web server software, development tools and more. Each is tightly integrated to allow the entire RTOS package to run seamlessly and efficiently, and allow Quatech to quickly add features that customers demand.
"Our goal is to provide embedded developers building data transfer devices with the tools they need to do their job easily and quickly. Quatech's ThinQ serial device servers, built on a Nucleus software foundation, ensure the secure and efficient transfer of sensitive information for businesses worldwide," said Robert Day, director of marketing for the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics.
