Microchip Introduces Industry's First 28-Pin LCD Microcontrollers

9/28/2004 - Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, announced eight new members of the 8-bit PIC® microcontroller family with an integrated Liquid-Crystal Display (LCD) module. These additions to the LCD PIC microcontroller family include the world’s first 28-pin LCD microcontrollers for simple, cost-effective display applications requiring embedded control, and the first programmable 80-pin microcontrollers capable of driving 192 segments for touchscreen and segmented LCD displays. The new members in Microchip’s family of LCD PIC microcontrollers complement an already extensive portfolio providing varying pincounts and levels of performance, and support for a wide selection of LCD-segment displays.

Microchip’s LCD PIC microcontroller family features Flash program memory, low power consumption and LCD control. Unlike competitive LCD microcontollers, Microchip’s Flash program memory enables maximum flexibility in code development and field reprogrammability. This family of LCD PIC microcontrollers also features nanoWatt Technology, which meets industry low-power design requirements -- including the need to drive LCD displays in SLEEP mode. The integrated LCD module is software-configurable, and reduces system components, occupied board space and system costs.

Example applications for the new PIC microcontroller family with integrated LCD module include: automotive (dashboard displays); instrumentation/measurement (medical instruments/monitors, meter reading, handheld terminal/remote reading); appliance (display/control units on stoves/ovens, microwaves, etc.); industrial (payment systems, water/gas/electric/heat utility meters, gasoline pumps); consumer (programmable thermostats/controls, irrigation control, home security systems, exercise equipment); communications (handset displays).

The high-pincount PIC18F8490/8390/6490/6390 LCD family members have the performance and features needed for embedded control, and meet the advanced display requirements of the segment and touchscreen LCD markets. The integrated LCD driver module is capable of driving 128 to 192 LCD segments in 64- and 80-pin packages, respectively. Additional features include:

Development Tools
To reduce time-to-market, all eight microcontrollers are supported by Microchip’s standard, high-performance development systems, including: MPLAB® Integrated Development Environment (IDE), MPLAB C18 C Compiler, MPLAB ICD 2 In-Circuit Debugger, and MPLAB ICE 2000/4000 In-Circuit Emulators. In addition, demonstration boards are expected to be available in November that ease development with this family’s advanced LCD features, including: the PICDEMTM LCD Demo Board (part # DM163028) and an LCD evaluation kit.

The PIC18FXX90 LCD microcontrollers are available today for general sampling and volume production. Samples are available now of the PIC16F916 and PIC16F917 products, and volume production is expected in December.
