9/28/2004 - Business air travelers are now enjoying in-flight entertainment and connectivity at a quality that may surpass even their home entertainment systems, with Lufthansa Technik's networked integrated cabin management and entertainment system based upon a wide variety of ICs from Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS).
Lufthansa Technik is the world market leader in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of commercial aircraft, their engines and components, serving more than 450 airline and VIP customers worldwide. Its product, niceTM (Networked Integrated Cabin Equipment), makes the operators' need for numerous separate networks to distribute on-board entertainment and control cabin functions obsolete. NiceTM delivers a standardized Ethernet networked architecture for an aircraft cabin, offering a range of cabin management, communication, business and entertainment applications for passengers and flight crews while meeting all industry requirements and certifications.
Developed in part by one of Cirrus Logic's third-party designers, Videon Central, nice'sTM customized in-flight entertainment and "office-in-the-sky applications" rely on the Cirrus Logic CS4271 single-chip stereo CODEC, the CS98000 advanced DVD video processor and the CS98200 multi-functional digital video decoder chip for highly integrated, high-performance digital audio and video capabilities.
NiceTM also incorporates the Cirrus Logic CS8952 Fast Ethernet transceiver to transmit digital signals throughout the cabin on various networks. Most recently, Videon Central added Cirrus Logic's new EP9301 ARM9-based embedded processor technology for personal control units in the passenger seats.
"Our vision is to give travelers the ability to remain connected to business critical applications, even when they are in the air. Further, we wish to provide the most state-of-the-art entertainment during flight. We are continually looking for new technology that provides outstanding solutions to our customers," said Andrew Muirhead, head of Lufthansa Technik's Innovation Engineering Group. "Cirrus Logic technology is prominently used by our design partner Videon Central to create the kind of state-of-the-art solutions we demand. By applying Cirrus Logic ICs to our products, we can bring all of the features found in a home theater system to the airplane."
The niceTM implementation is indicative of how Cirrus Logic third-party design houses like Videon Central are transitioning Cirrus Logic technology from concept to real-life applications, according to Terry Leeder, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing, Cirrus Logic. "The nice product line is a great example of how Cirrus Logic's audio and video ICs are being used in innovative ways to deliver digital entertainment to consumers anytime, anywhere," said Leeder.
