9/24/2004 - Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN), provider of innovative DSP and analog technologies for real world signal processing, announced that two of its engineers, Dr. Anuj Batra and Dr. Chaitali Sengupta, have been named to the 2004 list of the world's 100 Top Young Innovators by Technology Review, MIT's Magazine of Innovation. The TR100, chosen by the editors of Technology Review and an elite panel of judges, consists of 100 individuals under age 35 whose innovative work in technology has a profound impact on today's world. This year's nominees are recognized for their contribution in transforming the nature of technology and business in industries such as biotechnology and medicine, computing, nanotechnology and telecommunications.
Anuj Batra, Ph.D., is a member group technical staff in the DSP Solutions Research and Development Center. In 2002, he helped start an ultra wideband (UWB) development effort within Texas Instruments. UWB is a wireless technology for transmitting high-speed digital data over a large spectrum while consuming very low power. UWB is ideally suited for wireless communications, particularly short-range and high-speed data transmissions for personal area networks (PANs). UWB is well on its way to becoming a key wireless technology of the future, enabling applications such as Wireless USB, Wireless 1394 and Wireless IP.
Dr. Batra was the lead author for the ground-breaking multi-band OFDM physical layer proposal for Texas Instruments, which was submitted to the IEEE 802.15.3a task group standardization as a proposal for the next generation wireless ultra wideband (UWB) based physical layer for very high speed communications. The original proposal now serves as the fundamental baseline for the MultiBand OFDM Alliance (MBOA) proposal, now supported by more than 170 companies in the PC, CE and mobile industries. In addition to helping found the MBOA, Dr. Batra serves as the chairman of the System Definition sub-group, which is responsible for the defining the specification that will serve as the basis for all new UWB MBOA-based wireless communications chips. His research interests are in the areas of wireless communications, in particular, the design of high-speed wireless networks, multi-user detection theory, and coexistence between unlicensed wireless devices.
Dr. Batra holds a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Cornell University, a master of science in electrical engineering from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Chaitali Sengupta, Ph.D., senior member technical staff at TI has made innovative contributions to the field of wireless (3G) modem implementation. High speed data coupled with wide area mobility provides a new level of communications ability that will open new markets, connect an unprecedented number of people, and stimulate economic growth. 3G wireless modems provide the high data rates that are powering cutting edge applications such as video streaming, video-conferencing and mobile internet access.
Dr. Sengupta's achievements include designing techniques for reducing power consumption and improving performance of 3G mobiles, and system design and verification of hardware co-processors based modem architectures that are enabling software controlled yet high data-rate communication systems. She has authored over twenty conference and journal papers and contributed to books, mainly in the area of efficient implementation of wireless systems.
A native of India, she holds a bachelor of technology in computer science and engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and both a master of science in electrical engineering and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Rice University.
