TI Introduces Dual-Phase PWM Controller with Integrated Drivers

9/23/2004 - Simplifying high-current power supply designs, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced a multi-phase synchronous DC/DC buck controller with integrated adaptive gate drivers. The flexible power management device saves valuable board space and simplifies power design for dual-channel, multi-phase systems supporting up to 60 A, such as double-data rate (DDR) memory banks, point-of-load DC/DC converters, digital signal processors (DSPs) and ASICs used in telecom and networking power supplies. TI’s TPS40130 provides significantly higher performance and power efficiency over competing pulse-width modulation (PWM) power supply solutions. The controller can support input voltages from 3 V to 40 V, with output voltages from 0.7 V to 6 V at greater than 90 percent efficiency. The TPS40130 implements fixed frequency, peak current-mode control with single-cycle current balance. High accuracy current sensing can be implemented with an external sense resistor or lossless DC resistance (DCR) current sensing can be used. For added performance, an on-board differential load-sense amplifier provides remote load sensing for high current, high accuracy applications.

The TPS40130 is equipped with all supervisory and control features for today’s power supplies, including programmable under-voltage lock out (UVLO) and over-voltage protection, power good indicator, synchronization input, programmable over-current protection and selectable load-line programming. In addition, the differential load sense amplifier provides remote load sensing for high-current applications.

Availability, Packaging and Pricing
The TPS40130 controller is available in volume from TI and its authorized distributors. Packaged in a 30-pin TSSOP, suggested resale pricing is $1.30 each in quantities of 1,000 units. TI’s easy-to-use TPS40K Designer Software for the TPS40130 will be available in the first quarter of 2005. Evaluation modules, application notes, reference designs and TI’s new Power Management Selection Guide are available through power.ti.com.
