Broadcom and AT&T to Speed Development and Adoption of VoIP Services

9/23/2004 - Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor solutions enabling broadband communications, announced its participation in AT&T's VoIP Innovation and Interoperability Program, which is designed to enable manufacturers to build Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) consumer and business electronic products compatible with AT&T's VoIP network services.

As a charter member of AT&T's VoIP Innovation and Interoperability Program, Broadcom will work with AT&T to develop VoIP software and chipsets that can be used in a wide variety of consumer-electronic products, including broadband modems, corded and cordless phones, Wi-Fi® phones, set-top boxes, residential gateways, personal computers and other consumer communication devices. Consumer products based on Broadcom® chips and software will be compatible with AT&T's VoIP backbone network and service offering.

Providing VoIP business services to the marketplace since 1997, AT&T launched a residential VoIP service called AT&T CallVantage(SM) Service earlier this year. Through the use of high-speed Internet connections, like DSL or cable, AT&T delivers typical features such as call waiting, three-way calling, and call forwarding, as well as other more advanced features.

"Broadcom's field-proven VoIP software and silicon technology coupled with its leadership position in a variety of consumer electronic markets will accelerate the availability of products supporting AT&T's CallVantage Service," said Cathy Martine, AT&T Senior Vice President for Internet Telephony. "By working together we should be able to speed the adoption of this cost-effective technology by making new VoIP-enabled products for businesses and consumers quickly available."

"As one of the world's leading telephone service providers, with a global network and a brand that promises the best voice quality, AT&T's commitment to deliver a fully featured VoIP service to consumers legitimizes the residential VoIP market and will forever redefine consumer broadband services," said Robert A. Rango, Group Vice President of Broadcom's Mobile & Wireless Group. "AT&T's uncompromising dedication to providing world class service coupled with our advanced silicon solutions will bring VoIP service to major cities across the United States in 2004, enabling consumers to benefit from the many advantages VoIP-enabled services can offer."
