9/22/2004 - With the introduction of the CS5466, a new single-phase power meter IC from Cirrus Logic Inc., (Nasdaq: CRUS), manufacturers of residential power meters can implement more reliable, lower-cost and higher accuracy power meters for measuring consumer power usage.
Among the CS5466's capabilities is superior performance, offering energy data linearity to within a 0.1 percent of reading over a 1000:1 dynamic range, double the 500:1 dynamic range of other competitive ICs. This high performance allows the power meter device to accurately measure extremely small electrical current usage – an important task in a residential environment where recording energy usage of small appliances can go undetected by lower-performing converters.
"The CS5466 has been designed to provide both long-term reliability and high performance energy measurement," said Dave Biven, product marketing manager, Cirrus Logic. "This new IC retains the reliability characteristics of Cirrus Logic's field proven CS5460A, which has a long track record of reliable operation in both residential and industrial metering applications. This is especially important as many residential power meters are deployed outdoors for long periods of time.
"There continues to be a rapid transition away from mechanical power meters toward electronic meters," Biven continued. "Only electronic meters offer meter manufacturers and industrial users, such as large-scale manufacturing plants, further cost reductions and improved power monitoring capabilities. Cirrus Logic's family of power meter ICs provides a balanced offering of feature rich, cost-effective solutions for power meter systems."
Pricing and Availability
The CS5466 is available in 24-pin Shrink Small Outline Packages (SSOP) and is priced at $1.44 in quantities of 10,000.
