Alpine Selects I-Logix iNotion Portal for Process Improvement Project

9/20/2004 - Embedded systems and software solutions provider I-Logix announced that their widely acclaimed product lifecycle management portal iNotion has been selected to help implement a company-wide Process Improvement Project (PIP) for audio equipment manufacturer Alpine Electronics. The goal of the PIP is to achieve Capability Maturity Model® Integration, or CMMI certification for a new worldwide communications project. With project team members in Europe, Alpine headquarters in Japan, and development in both China and California, Alpine was seeking a solution that could accommodate complex international collaboration. Prior to iNotion, Alpine implemented content management tools Access, Lotus, and Excel but found that these suites lacked traceability, scalability, and the ability for external companies to submit documents, which are all standard features of iNotion. With iNotion, Alpine will have an unprecedented level of revision control making it easier to address the continually changing requirements of the automotive industry and reduce overall impact costs.

Alpine reviewed the benefits and features of several tools currently on the market including iNotion, DOORS, Clear Case, and Clear Quest. Interoperability with existing software was a major consideration for Alpine and iNotion was the only tool flexible enough to meet their needs. As a web-based technology, iNotion works with existing productivity software programs to enhance the flow of accurate and timely information to key business units including marketing, product development, quality assurance, suppliers, and customers creating a highly organized virtual work space. iNotion is simple to use, companies train their own employees, and it enhances employee productivity after one three hour training session.

"As the automotive industry shifts design practice from a mechanical approach to a software approach, tools such as iNotion become a necessary component," said Alpine Key Account Manager and PIP Project Leader, Martin Warstat. "iNotion has made life at Alpine significantly easier regarding CMMI implementation."

iNotion is a fully scalable and easily deployable PLM solution. Because it is a web-based portal, any computer with Internet Explorer can access iNotion, and no client needs to be installed on the PC. As a central server based system, documents submitted to iNotion are available immediately, eliminating the need for worldwide replications. Multiple languages including Chinese, Japanese, German, and English are currently supported through a common interface. Additional languages are available upon request.

"Alpine, like many other automotive and OEM suppliers, sought a next generation PLM solution to solve some key problems that frequently plague today’s highly competitive global marketplace," said Neeraj Chandra, I-Logix Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Development. "iNotion and it’s increased capacity to aggregate product and process related information allows companies to get products to the market faster, ensure regulatory standards compliance, enable quality assurance certification such as CMMI, and reduce overall deployment cost."

iNotion features include Product Library Management, a comprehensive solution for archival, search, and retrieval of development artifacts and information across multiple projects. Project Management includes real-time solutions such as standard or user-defined report generation, task prioritization, and project plan estimations that fully integrate with Microsoft Project. Task Management allows participants to seamlessly share their work, collaborate on ideas, notify others of specific events, and monitor the progress of tasks assigned to all product team members. Process auditing and artifact inspection are all captured in a moderated environment known as Inspection Management. Component Management enables component-based development by providing product team members with the capability to create, identify, catalog, easily find and reuse software components. Team members can also configure features to notify them of any update to a task, query, or artifact.

Workflow compliance and data integrity are ensured using 128 bit secure SSL transmission, user authentication, and access control procedures. 3rd Party Plug-In Application Programming Interface (API) allows companies to leverage their existing investments in all COTS or homegrown products, and stay within the iNotion infrastructure. iNotion is a flexible and fully scalable software solution whose features can be purchased together or separately allowing iNotion to grow with your company. Pricing is based on volume and is offered as a fixed seat license or on a per-seat, per-month subscription service.
