9/17/2004 - Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq:PTEC) announced that Toro National Support Network (Toro NSN(R)), the in-house systems integrator and irrigation central control systems provider of The Toro Company (NYSE:TTC) has expanded its commitment to use and distribute the Phoenix Technologies FirstWare RecoverTM applications.
Toro NSN currently uses the Phoenix FirstWare Recover and pre-OS Phoenix Technologies cME Console PlatformTM applications to power the backup of important data and proprietary applications.
About the Toro NSN Support Service and Phoenix Recover Application
Thousands of large turf irrigation customers worldwide, including businesses and golf courses, demand flawless operation of their Toro irrigation systems. Many of these large irrigation customers subscribe to the Toro NSN support service, located in Abilene, Texas, which provides a reliable, 24/7/365 round-the-clock resource for central system troubleshooting and systems operation assistance. The Phoenix FirstWare Recover applications make it possible for Toro NSN to be free from reliance on CD-backups which could be lost or damaged in the daily operations of a high-use customer.
At the heart of Toro's central irrigation control system is an industry standard x86 architecture PC running Windows XP(R). In the past, if system or data recovery was necessary for a customer, Toro NSN technicians would direct the customer to locate and insert backup Windows OS and application CDs shipped with the system, and re-install the software. If the system could not be rebooted, Toro NSN would ship out a replacement PC.
Now, when customers call the Toro NSN support line for help, they don't have to go searching for backup CDs, which reduces the length of support calls. The original "factory" image is stored in a tamper-proof, locked-down partition that only the Phoenix Technologies Core System Software can access.
About Phoenix Technologies Recover Applications
Phoenix Technologies' pre-O/S applications cover all aspects of starting, managing, securing, maintaining, and shutting down PCs and other intelligent digital devices, to allow users to enable, protect and recover their important data and X86-based PCs and digital devices.
Phoenix Technologies' FirstWare and cME applications provide an innovative way for OEMs, "white box" manufacturers, system builders, resellers, and distributors to add quality and reliability while reducing manufacturing and support costs. The Phoenix cME and FirstWare applications also increase value for businesses and consumers by helping them diagnose and recover PCs and digital devices -- with little or no technical assistance and without recovery CDs -- if the OS crashes or will not boot.
The Phoenix Technologies FirstWare Recover application provides system backup and recovery -- including access to Web-based support from the pre-OS environment -- and gives the user a choice to restore the entire hard drive or only a specific partition. Phoenix Technologies' Recover Pro application allows easy restoration of an original hard drive image so workers can remain productive.
"The Toro NSN irrigation systems require continuous uptime and Toro needed a fully self-contained and secure solution. Our Phoenix Recover application, which places system software in a secure host-protected area of the PC and eliminates the need for a backup CD, was the only solution that met all of Toro NSN's requirements," said Michael Goldgof, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Corporate Marketing and Product Divisions for Phoenix Technologies. "The Phoenix Recover application is a critical ingredient of Toro's 24/7/365 service component, providing CD-less, hassle-free system recovery for industry standard systems that operate in the most demanding environments. Phoenix is committed to help global leaders such as Toro with Core System Software, tools and applications that make their X86-based devices 'secure from the start.'"
