9/16/2004 - Insignia Solutions® (NASDAQ: INSG), announced that it has joined the OSGi Alliance and has become an active participant in its new Mobile Expert Group. The OSGi Alliance was formed by industry leaders to promote a standardized framework and method to dynamically update a range of consumer electronics based devices, ranging from set top boxes to telematics systems and now mobile phones. OSGi's Mobile Expert Group (MEG) consists of leaders in the mobile device management industry working to apply the dynamic OSGi framework to a new generation of mobile phones.
In addition, Insignia Solutions announced that Peter Bernard, Chief Product Officer, will be speaking at the upcoming OSGi Alliance 2004 World Congress, held in Barcelona on October 11-15. Mr. Bernard will speak on the topic of helping mobile operators and terminal vendors dynamically update the capabilities of deployed terminals. More information on the OSGi Alliance World Congress can be found at http://www.osgiworldcongress.com.
"Insignia's participation in the OSGi MEG further reinforces our strong commitment to drive interoperability and innovation in the mobile device management market," said Mark McMillan, CEO of Insignia. "The efforts of the OSGi Alliance are a significant complement to our on-going efforts in the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) and the Java Community Process (JCP), where Insignia is an Executive Committee member."
The ability for operators and terminal manufacturers to dynamically update the capabilities of phones in the field enables the deployment of a much wider range of mobile services, much faster, to an existing population of subscribers. By leveraging open interoperability standards such as OMA-DM and the upcoming OSGi MEG framework, Insignia will enable operators to add fundamental new capabilities to phones while in customer hands, ranging from new Java environments, new messaging technologies and new media playback technologies. This extends the market for mobile device management into a new area that can substantially increase and accelerate Average Revenue Per User, or ARPU.
"The involvement of Insignia Solutions in the OSGi Alliance, specifically the Mobile Expert Group, will help accelerate the ability to share and re-use programmatic services between applications and to manage application lifecycles," said Dr. John R. Barr, President of the OSGi Alliance, "Insignia's innovation in the mobile device management industry is a welcome addition to our efforts."
