Pace, Espial Target Hospitality Market with Full-Featured IPTV Box

9/15/2004 - Pace Micro Technology (pic.l), the world's largest dedicated developer of digital set-top box technology, and Espial, the leading provider of set top box software and IPTV applications, have combined forces to deliver a full-featured set top box targeted at the hospitality industry. The Pace IP420, embedded with the Espial Escape browser, will offer hotel viewers a full range of services such as pay-per-view, video-on-demand, interactive shopping and community or service information.

"Both business and vacation travellers have come to expect access to services like Video On Demand and Web browsing or email via the television," says David Gillies, Director of Technology at Pace Micro Technology. "Pace is leveraging Espial's experience in the IPTV/hospitality industry to deliver digital solutions that transform the hotel TV experience at a realistic cost of investment."

"Pace is the largest set top box manufacturer internationally, recognized on all platforms - Cable, Satellite, Terrestrial and Digital Broadband Media (IPTV)," says Dr Neale Foster, Director of Marketing for Television at Espial. "Pace recognized that the Espial Escape browser is the defacto browser in the IPTV/hospitality industry. Together with Pace technology we can deliver services that generate revenue and encourage customer loyalty, key drivers for the hospitality industry.

The solution is based on Pace's IP420 set-top box and incorporates the Espial Escape browser. The IP420 is part of Pace's Digital Broadband Media (DBM) range, which is already being used by telcos and broadband IP operators to launch advanced television and multimedia services over existing telecommunications networks. Now, using an Ethernet-based local TV network, the IP420 can be installed in hotel rooms to deliver enhanced but user-friendly entertainment services. Other Pace DBM products, such as the higher-specification IP440, can be used to expand hotel TV services further, through new compression technologies such as MPEG-4 Part10 (H.264).

The Espial Escape browser is built for a television environment, enhancing user interaction with assessment for alternate navigation paradigms, automatic re-sizing of content, zooming, multidimensional remote control navigation and programmable link highlighting. Compliant to international television standards and portable across platforms and devices, Espial Escape adapts television content for ideal television viewing.
