9/10/2004 - Concurrent Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: CCUR) announced a partnership with Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), the leading supplier of broadband access and IP video solutions. The partnership will leverage Concurrent’s leadership and proven experience in delivering video-on-demand (VOD) to broadband operators and Alcatel’s leading market position in broadband access and triple play solutions. Through this strategic alliance, Concurrent and Alcatel have jointly developed, delivered and are now marketing a fully scalable integrated solution for broadband telecommunications carriers to provide broadcast television and interactive VOD to the rapidly growing number of DSL video subscribers worldwide.
World-Class Partnership Solution Unveiled at IBC
The Alcatel-Concurrent integrated solution will premiere at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, held Sept. 9-14, in both Alcatel booth #4.238 and Concurrent booth #4.149. Executives from both companies will provide a demonstration overview and booth presentation, which will be webcast live from the show, with a reception following. To access the webcast on Sept. 10 at 9:00 a.m. EDT (15:00 CEST), please visit Concurrent’s web site at www.ccur.com.
According to documented research, DSL is the leading broadband access technology worldwide with 73.4 million subscribers as of March 2004, and the number is growing by 2 million lines per month. Alcatel is the world leader in DSL shipments with a 37.7 percent cumulative market share, more than four times the nearest competitor’s share. Telcos looking to extend their broadband DSL penetration and increase the average revenue per user are looking to video services and VOD. It is currently estimated that there are approximately 230,000 DSL and fiber subscribers worldwide with access to VOD, and market research indicates that aggressive roll-out plans should take VOD subscriber numbers to over 1 million within 12 months. Research reports indicate there will be 14 million video-over-DSL subscribers by 2007.
Through the Alcatel-Concurrent partnership, the companies are offering an integrated solution that capitalizes on the strengths of Alcatel’s global reach and robust content distribution network and video middleware and Concurrent’s scalable and high-capacity video server system, together providing broadband operators with unparalleled technology that enables significant expansion of their services.
A recognized leader within the digital cable market, Concurrent’s MediaHawk® On-Demand solution has been widely deployed by major cable operators in Asia, Europe and North America with 87 commercial deployments and more than 100 committed sites. Alcatel’s Open Media Suite has been widely deployed in Europe, Asia, and North America, primarily within broadband IP environments. Alcatel's DSL network equipment, the 7300/7301 ASAM, equips the networks of more than 120 telcos in 53 countries. The Alcatel-Concurrent integrated solution empowers service providers to implement fully automated networks of hundreds of video servers, giving each the capability to stream tens of thousands of simultaneous television-quality videos with full VCR-like functionality.
“This partnership is a natural extension of Concurrent’s leadership in the cable space,” said Gary Trimm, president and CEO of Concurrent. “Alcatel and Concurrent share the same view of the next generation of video servers and content distribution network products. Through the synergy of Concurrent's strength in VOD and Alcatel's strength in DSL applications, we expect to define an industry-leading, integrated video over DSL solution for the broadband IP market.”
“Many telcos today are making aggressive decisions to offer video services over DSL networks. Because of Concurrent’s successful deployment history, we have chosen them as our preferred partner in this market,” said Alan Mottram, president of Alcatel's fixed solutions activities. “Concurrent strengthens our capability to provide larger scale end-to-end IPTV solutions for our customers, and we look forward to helping our customers grow their business in an increasingly competitive broadband IP marketplace.”
As evidence of the depth of this partnership, Alcatel and Concurrent have dedicated development teams, and both companies are excited about the prospects of telco VOD in the future.
