9/10/2004 - Kreatel, leading provider of IP set-top box solutions for IP TV, announced that Kreatel has chosen Ateme’s H.264/AVC and Microsoft Windows Media 9 Series decoders for the Kreatel IP-STB 1700 platform.
Since launching its first IP set-top box system four years ago, Kreatel has delivered its systems to telecom operators worldwide. Being a leader of MPEG-2 IP TV, Kreatel is now turning towards this next booming application domain by deploying IP set top boxes supporting both H.264/AVC and WM9 based on Texas Instruments’ (TI) digital signal processor (DSP) -based digital media processors.
“Ateme, a leading provider of audio/video algorithms based on DSPs, successfully optimized and integrated advanced video codecs on Texas Instruments’ DM642 platform Having a high performance, programmable solution is critical for OEMs who want to support multiple compression schemes. Ateme offers a full, real-time implementation of H.264/AVC (both Baseline and Main Profiles) and WMV9 on several of TI’s DSP platforms.
Ateme has designed and optimized codecs such as JPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4/ASP. Developing codecs for H.264/AVC and Windows Media 9 series was thus in its natural lineage. Stemmed from several months of development, Ateme’s H.264/AVC and WM9 decoders enable to decode a full D1 stream (with DVD quality, up to 1.2 Mbps) in real-time on a single 600 MHz DSP from TI.
“We are really glad that Kreatel has chosen Ateme’s WM9 and H.264/AVC decoders to be integrated in its new IP-STB,” said Marc Guillaumet, Ateme’s Marketing Director. “We are confident that Kreatel is designing a great product which will boost the use of VOD in home equipments. The trust given by Kreatel will strengthen Ateme in its good beginnings on this emerging market.”
“Low bitrate video is important for many operators in order to reduce bandwidth, and with the Kreatel IP-STB 1700 platform, we can help them reach that target,” says Lars Bengtsson, President and CEO of Kreatel. “We chose Ateme for its best quality H.264/AVC and WM9 decoders and the integration support that allows operators to reduce its time-to-market.”
“We are pleased to enable high quality video streaming on an IP set top box such as the Kreatel 1700 Series by leveraging the processing power of our DM642 platform combined with Ateme’s advanced codecs,” said Arnaud Duclap, DSP business development manager for TI’s video/imaging solutions in Europe. “Kreatel is driving the video on demand market to new levels, and our programmable platform has headroom to spare.”
