Birdstep Receives Patent for Mobile IP Client VPN Management

8/31/2004 - Birdstep Technology announced that their most recent patent application has been approved by the Norwegian Patent Office (NPO). This patent protects the intellectual property rights for technology that permits seamless mobility across security boundaries, fully compatible with existing enterprise security mechanisms and network infrastructure.

The requirement for mobility solutions in enterprises demands mobilizing proven security mechanisms that ensure the integrity of the information flow. Birdstep has invented a unique solution to this problem and filed a patent application 11. July 2002, which is now approved. Such requirements open a very large market for the Birdstep Intelligent Mobile IP Client featuring this patented technology. Birdstep’s solution works with the existing major VPN solutions in the market. An enterprise that has invested in a VPN solution can now add mobility to their existing solution without changes in their existing security policy enabled by marketing leading VPN clients, VPN concentrators and firewalls. The patented technology from Birdstep permits the user to have an Internet connection that moves from inside the VPN tunnel to a direct intranet connection depending on where the user is presently located. If the user is in a public area, the traffic runs inside the VPN tunnel, when the user is back to the secure network from the enterprise, the Mobile IP technology from Birdstep automatically moves that traffic out of the VPN to reduce the overhead. The terminal uses the same IP address, and application sessions are maintained even when the terminal switches from public to private networks.

“Our focus is to be the technology market leaders in seamless mobility. Mobility solutions require industry proven security systems in place. To be able to make existing VPN solutions completely mobile and non intrusive adds tremendous value to our mobile solution”, said Walter Hühn, VP and Global Director Mobile IP at Birdstep, “Enterprise managers do not want to have to pay for the overhead the VPN tunnel creates when the user is within the secure enterprise network. Our solution makes sure that this does not happen.”

“The solution is based on Espen Klovning’s research as tech lead in the Birdstep Mobile IP team, and culminated in a very elegant solution combining standard Mobile IP and VPN technologies. Such solution permits third party VPN solutions to be completely mobile. Now enterprises can safely deploy an intelligent seamless roaming solution that always finds the best available network at any time, knowing that the security mechanisms will be triggered when needed or turned off when the user is in a safe environment. This solution reduces the complexity of mobile solutions as well as it automates the mechanisms needed to experience real seamless mobility,” said Stefano Holguin, VP Marketing at Birdstep. “We are very proud to receive the acknowledgement of the value of such technology through the attainment of this patent.”

Birdstep Intelligent Mobile IP Client supports secure and continuous connectivity between WLAN Zones (also known as guest zones or hotspots) and GSM/GPRS/UMTS/CDMA networks. This market leading client allows users to seamlessly connect and re-connect across different types of infrastructures without application downtime, security degradation or user intervention. The client also mobilizes security components based both IPSEC (Checkpoint, Cisco, Nortel Contivity, Microsoft, NetScreen) and SSL VPN solutions as well as thin clients solutions such as Citrix without interruption. Recognizing the need for security in certain networks, the client triggers the security mechanisms and moves the traffic inside the existing security framework. When the user moves back to a secure environment, the client makes sure that the traffic continues to flow seamlessly, but this time without the encryption overhead. Such features, which is now patented by Birdstep, gives complete hassle-free mobility without requiring the user to do something except continue doing work as usual when moving between networks.
