8/30/2004 - VersaLogic Corp. will demonstrate the ActivMedia Robotics PatrolBot at booth 909 at the Embedded Systems Conference in Boston, MA, September 14 – 15. PatrolBot is the first fully autonomous robotic surveillance and monitoring system available off-the-shelf. PatrolBot’s intelligence resides inside its VersaLogic embedded PC.
“We chose VersaLogic embedded computers because they are robust and reliable, and because VersaLogic stays on top of ever-advancing technologies,” said Matt Vestal, lead systems engineer at ActivMedia. “They are very responsive when it comes to support in embedding their products into our platforms, and they listen to our feedback.”
Security concerns are leading laboratories, defense fabrication plants, data centers and other sensitive areas to remove human guards from the premises. Installing thousands of cameras to provide comprehensive surveillance can be costly in a large facility crowded with equipment. In such locations, mobile PatrolBots with embedded PCs from VersaLogic augment and back up fixed systems. PatrolBots are also used to carry sensors not practical for permanent installations and new monitoring equipment needed on short notice.
PatrolBot can travel to destinations in a known building, circumventing obstacles in its path. Security personnel watching and listening from the control room may intercede to manually drive the robot and camera, or PatrolBot may be integrated to respond automatically to existing alarms. Security systems feed their commands to PatrolBot’s embedded computer, which also handles processing for cameras, sound and networking via wireless Ethernet.
Like many OEMs, ActivMedia Robotics needed an embedded solution with long-term availability and excellent support. The PatrolBot was recently upgraded from a a VersaLogic Pentium EBX single board computer, to VersaLogic's new new Cobra EBX computer with an 1.6 GHz Pentium® M processor. "The difference in computing power is amazing" notes Vestal. "With very little change in power consumption [from the previous Pentium III board], the Cobra is a real winner in our application"
“Your company support team has come through for us repeatedly, in a timely fashion, and with the right information.,” acknowledges William Kennedy from ActivMedia, “We, too, value our company largely based on how well we support our customers, so we hold all our vendors to a very high standard. Your support team stands above the rest.”
