IONA Selects Sleepycat Software's Berkeley DB High Availability

8/19/2004 - Sleepycat Software, makers of Berkeley DB - the most widely deployed application-specific data management software in the world with over 200 million deployments, announced that IONA Technologies® (NASDAQ: IONA), a world leader in high-performance integration solutions for mission-critical IT environments, has selected Berkeley DB High Availability to provide fault-tolerant data management across IONA's Orbix®, ArtixTM, and OrbacusTM product lines.

"Our customers rely on the performance and reliability of IONA's integration products to support their most critical business applications and systems. As such, we need extremely high reliability, availability and performance from our technology partners," said Scott Devens, vice president, Products, IONA Technologies. "We extended our use of Berkeley DB High Availability across our product lines because it offers carrier grade, fault-tolerant data storage services to the IT organizations utilizing our products."

"We're pleased that IONA has expanded their use of Berkeley DB," said Michael Olson, CEO of Sleepycat. "Berkeley DB High Availability is proven in rigorous carrier-grade environments where continuous availability is critical."

IONA's products are used by many of the world's telecommunications service and equipment providers and by leading financial services organizations in the Fortune Global 500. For these customers, zero downtime is of critical importance. By expanding the use of Berkeley DB High Availability across its multiple product lines, IONA ensures that its customers have an infrastructure that is fault-tolerant and runs without service interruptions to support its distributed applications.

Berkeley DB is currently used by IONA's CORBA Persistent State Service and Notification Service. The new agreement expands IONA's license to use Berkeley DB to all of IONA's products.

The Persistent State Service (PSS) is a CORBA service for building CORBA servers that access persistent data and include transactional support. PSS creates a CORBA-based abstraction layer between a server and persistent data. The implementation of PSS is based on Berkeley DB, which provides fast, scalable, reliable and cost-effective data persistence and is included with the ORB. The ORB uses PSS extensively in its internal operation, and the PSS interface is available for use by IONA application developers.

The Notification Service provides an asynchronous, publish-and-subscribe communication method among components that enables highly reliable message delivery, even if the connection or recipients go down temporarily. The Notification Service uses Berkeley DB as a built-in database for the persistence of the Notification messages until they can be delivered to their destinations.
