8/10/2004 - StarGen, a fabless semiconductor company specializing in advanced serial switched interconnect solutions, announced that Wade Appelman has joined the company as the vice president of marketing and business development. A seasoned executive with strong marketing and startup experience, he has held leadership positions with several innovative system and semiconductor companies such as Vitesse Semiconductor and Cabletron Systems. Appelman will be responsible for leading the marketing effort for StarGen’s StarFabric product line, and will drive the establishment of the company’s next generation Advanced Switching platform as the dominant switched interconnect solution for next-generation communication, storage, server, and embedded system designs.
“Driving industry programs, developing partner eco-systems, and telling the ASI (Advanced Switching Interconnect) story are critical initiatives for StarGen,” said Tim Miller, CEO of StarGen. “We are excited to add to our seasoned team, and look forward to leveraging Wade’s talents to help us in these critical areas.”
Prior to joining StarGen, Appelman was vice president of sales and marketing for Zagros Networks. He also served as vice president of marketing for the Advanced Networking Product Division of Vitesse Semiconductor, where he led strategic marketing for the company's successful network processor (NPU), switch fabric, and traffic management programs. As vice president of marketing for Sitera Inc. (acquired by Vitesse in the spring of 2000 for $750M), Appelman was responsible for launching the company's highly successful NPU. He was senior director of worldwide product management and marketing at Cabletron Systems, and has held various positions at Unisys Corporation.
In a related announcement, CONTEC of Osaka Japan, with offices in San Jose, CA, announced a PCI expansion solution using StarFabric technology in a PCMCIA card form factor. The announcements follow a string of positive news for the company, including the addition of Maria Ottaviano as corporate controller and the recent closing of an $8.5 million round of venture funding.
StarGen is a fabless semiconductor company and has sold over two hundred thousand StarFabric ports to more than 50 customers worldwide, with design wins across a broad spectrum of markets including storage, communications, high performance imaging, automated test, and video distribution, among many others.
The Advanced Switching product line, slated for delivery in early 2005, will feature a family of bridges and switches based on the emerging PCI Express and Advanced Switching Interconnect industry standards. StarGen is also a sponsor of the Advanced Switching Interconnect Special Interest Group (ASI SIG) and chairs the Marketing Work Group and key Technical Work Groups.
