About Egypt's Broadband Initiative
In May 2004, Egypt's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Ahmed Nazief, announced its adoption of broadband access services. The three-year initiative, through public and private partnerships is expected to increase ADSL penetration with a target of 50,000 subscribers in its first year. The focus on high-speed access technologies is part of the government's wider information society initiative, specifically naming ADSL as an access technology of choice. The goals of the initiative are to provide a cost effective, easy to install rollout, followed by a strong marketing campaign highlighting public awareness of ADSL. Since spearheading the Egypt broadband initiative in May, Ahmed Nazief has now been named Prime Minister of Egypt.
