Agilent Breaks Performance Record with Embedded SerDes ASIC

8/2/2004 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) announced that its embedded SerDes ASIC technology has set a performance record for storage and networking applications. In tests conducted at Agilent, a leading company's Ethernet XAUI backplane using line cards with Agilent embedded SerDes ASICs achieved error-free transmission driving signals over FR4 material a distance of 223 centimeters (88 inches). This distance is more than twice that of the competition's best published result.

The ability to drive signals over a longer distance demonstrates that Agilent's embedded SerDes ASIC can tolerate the losses associated with multi-gigabit traffic over printed circuit board traces and XAUI system backplane interconnects. The tests also revealed that Agilent's embedded SerDes ASIC provides a bit error rate of 10 (-15) and can tolerate 140 millivolts of crosstalk. These performance breakthroughs allow the system designer more margin to build a larger chassis with more interconnections to boost bandwidth capacity.

"Continuous error-free transmission over this distance demonstrates the ability of our ASICs to operate in a high loss networking environment," said James Stewart, vice president and general manager of Agilent's ASIC Products Division. "The test results confirm that our embedded SerDes ASIC is best-in-class for high-speed applications. These performance results show why the industry's storage, computing and networking leaders are turning to Agilent for their demanding next-generation switch, router and server designs."

Agilent's embedded SerDes ASIC offers low power consumption and extremely low jitter, enabling Agilent to integrate more than 200 SerDes channels onto a single 0.13 micron CMOS chip, each operating at up to 4.25 Gb/s. Agilent's embedded SerDes ASIC development model provides support throughout the entire product lifecycle. It incorporates testing capabilities as early as the definition of system-level architecture and accounts for in-circuit manufacturing test, functional test, system turn-on and debug, and field diagnostics. With this model, Agilent enables equipment manufacturers to develop high-bandwidth networking and storage systems with superior reliability and reduced size, complexity and cost.
