Tektronix Improves WFM700 Video Monitor with Free Firmware Upgrade

7/30/2004 - Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE: TEK), a leading worldwide provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation, announced new firmware upgrades that extend the capabilities of the industry-leading WFM700 series of multi-format video waveform monitors. All new WFM700 units will ship with this firmware and customers with previously purchased WFM700 models can download a free firmware upgrade from the Tektronix website at www.tektronix.com.

Waveform monitors present critical information on the fidelity of a video signal. They are the primary tools used for performance monitoring and maintenance of video systems and video equipment in post-production facilities, broadcast operations, and manufacturing plants.

"Monitoring digital video quality continually presents new challenges to broadcasters everywhere and Tektronix is committed to help our customers meet those challenges," said Todd Biddle, Vice President, Video Product Line at Tektronix. "We continue to add new capabilities to the WFM700 based on requests from our customers. With the latest enhancements, the industry-leading WFM700 further assists customers in avoiding revenue loss due to video and audio quality problems and reduces operating expenses associated with achieving and maintaining desired content quality."

The new firmware provides a number of features. For content monitoring, a new multi-axis display of surround-sound audio shows audio levels, total sound volume, phantom sound sources, and the dominant sound source to enable the efficient adjustment of surround-sound audio content. In addition, all WFM700 models can now display safe area graticules on the picture display to help editors correctly position action, graphics, or text in the video image.

Engineering staff using the WFM700M will appreciate the new automated measurement of six eye pattern parameters, including rise and fall overshoot, plus a histogram of eye pattern signal levels, that help engineers to detect physical signal problems earlier and diagnose them more quickly.

Operations staff benefit from new abilities to detect closed caption services, view decoded closed caption on the picture display, and display data in user-specified ancillary data packets to help detect and isolate problems in ancillary data.

"We needed to decode captions in the HD signal format and tried a number of products from a variety of vendors," said Kevin Shorter, VP Engineering & Technology, Turner Studios. "Most of these did not meet our needs, but the Tektronix WFM 700 performed well for us."

About the WFM700 Series
The Tektronix WFM700 series multi-format, multi-standard waveform monitors offer the monitoring and measurement capabilities needed in the production, post-production, distribution, and transmission of high-definition (HD) and standard-definition (SD) digital video and audio content. With specialized Diamond, Arrowhead and Lightning gamut monitoring displays, session and status screens, a user-configurable multi-mode display, and eye and jitter measurements configurable for full field or line select, the WFM700 series provides users with the powerful tools to enable quick error detection.

For mixed HD/SD environments, the multi-format WFM700A provides the tools needed to perform such operational monitoring tasks as checking signal validity and content quality, setting levels, and verifying signal paths. The WFM700HD offers an HD-only version of these same capabilities. The WFM700M offers all the capabilities of the WFM700A plus the digital analysis capabilities important in the design, installation and maintenance of digital video systems, including eye, jitter, and data measurements for both HD and SD formats. With available digital audio monitoring support, the capabilities of any WFM700 can be expanded to monitor both digital video and up to eight channels of AES/EBU embedded or non-embedded audio in a single instrument.
