Vitesse VSC8479 Transceiver Enables Next Generation 10 Gbps Applications

7/28/2004 - Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Nasdaq: VTSS) announced the immediate availability of the VSC8479, a 1.1 Watt, 16-bit, 9.953 Gbps to 11.3 Gbps transceiver integrated circuit. The VSC8479 provides the world’s most advanced feature set for 16-bit transceivers at one half of the power of current solutions. The device has already secured design wins in the top five telecom equipment OEMs next-generation systems. This single chip solution also integrates the critical design elements needed in 300-pin transponder MSA applications. According to industry sources, demand for 10 Gbps transceivers in these applications is expected to continue to grow at a 50% CAGR through 2007.

The VSC8479 alleviates concern regarding an integrated bi-directional SerDes solution by providing exceptional crosstalk immune SONET jitter generation and tolerance performance over asynchronous transmit and receive frequency conditions. Superior optical performance is achieved by use of the programmable input signal equalization feature and a highly sensitive input receiver with offset control that eliminates the need for an external post amplifier. These advanced attributes enhance both module and line card designs by reducing required board space, and external chip count, and by extending optical link performance while reducing overall function cost by over 50%.

“The VSC8479 gives us considerable advantage in terms of functionality, power consumption, and PCB real estate in our latest range of 300-pin DWDM and tunable transponder products,” said Peter Dartnell, system architect at Bookham Technology. “The enhanced feature set in a single chip solution has resulted in reduced hardware and improved packing density for the high-performance, small form factor outline.”

Two Applications - One Chip Solution Shortens Time to Market
The VSC8479 feature set and optical performance benefits 300-pin MSA module vendors who now need to provide smaller form factor modules that support data rates up to 11.1 Gbps at lower power and at ever-decreasing cost. This transceiver is also an ideal choice for host motherboards that multiplex and demultiplex XFP module XFI serial data streams to the 16-bit wide (SFI-4) parallel interfaces that are common to network processing chips. System OEMs value the excellent jitter generation performance, XFI interface performance across long FR-4 board traces, and the powerful programmable interface that allows full software-based system configuration control and monitoring.

Vitesse has developed the VSC8479XFP evaluation platform that allows system houses to quickly evaluate VSC8479 interoperability with OEM supplied XFP modules. This platform provides a proven reference design that enables designers who are integrating low-cost XFP modules into existing systems to shorten their time-to-market. Vitesse provides the design files necessary for telecom and datacom system manufacturers to complete this work without consuming additional in-house design resources.

Vitesse has used this evaluation platform to demonstrate interoperability of the VSC8479 in line card Host ASIC applications with XFP modules from industry-leading manufacturers such as Agilent, Bookham Technology, E2O, Finisar, Infineon, JDSU, and OpNext. The results of this work has aided Vitesse in securing design wins in high-density switch and router line cards in addition to traditional 300-pin Multi Source Agreement (MSA) compatible transponders.

Transceiver Reduces System Costs as well as Board Space
Other features of the VSC8479 include an integrated adjustable loss of signal (LOS) indicator enabling optical modulation, amplitude monitoring, and XFI host bus signal monitoring. A selectable two-wire serial or serial peripheral interface (SPI) provides full micro-controller access to all status and control registers. This allows maximum flexibility and re-use of the VSC8479 across multiple applications using a common design platform. The built-in self-test function (BIST) provides PRBS and user-defined pattern checker and error counter to facilitate manufacturing and field test issues.

Peter Dartnell, Bookham Technology, further comments, “The SPI provides an internal communications interface that simplifies the hardware architecture. Additionally, the BIST functions are streamlining our full-speed production testing and consequently reducing our manufacturing cost base.”

The VSC8479SK is available now and is priced at $99 USD per unit in volume quantities. The VSC8479XFP evaluation board is also available now and is priced at $1500 USD each.
