7/28/2004 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) announced that Saskatchewan Telecommunications (SaskTel), a full-service communications company that offers complete wire-line, wireless, Internet and e-Business solutions to businesses and residents in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, has deployed the Sun Java Enterprise System running on the Solaris 9 Operating System.
This summer, SaskTel is introducing a new mail service, the eMessaging solution based on the Java Enterprise System, targeted at the small- to medium-sized enterprises in Western Canada. By leveraging the pre-integrated and tested components of Java Enterprise System's communication and collaboration network service, SaskTel can decrease the time-to-market for new services. As SaskTel's business customers' requirements evolve, SaskTel can easily add new functionalities such as the portal, instant messaging, availability and security features without making significant additional IT investments. By leveraging various components within the Java Enterprise System and the expertise of Sun consultants, SaskTel was able to shave 12 months from the time to market for the eMessaging service. This 12-month advantage translates into more than $4 million in net present value (NPV) according to E-Business Strategies.
The same ROI Study by E-Business Strategies projects SaskTel's three-year return on investment (ROI) based on the initial Java Enterprise System subscription at more than 700 percent. "With roughly 454,000 business and residential customers, we needed a simple and affordable solution that would grow with the company. The Java Enterprise System provides us with the flexibility we need to meet our business goals by expanding our portfolio to satisfy growing business communication needs with a full and expandable suite of services," said Curt Smith, General Manager, SaskTel. "Today, when you use the term mail service, it's no longer just thought of as e-mail the application. It includes directory services, calendar services, storage on the server, wireless capabilities, as well as the other applications that come around to make it more of a software system – and the Java Enterprise System provided all those components in one integrated system."
"Sun continues to see widespread adoption of the Java Enterprise System in vertical markets such as telecommunications and healthcare where customers can easily leverage the innovative infinite usage model to deliver value-added services to users and partners at no extra cost," said John Loiacono, executive vice president of Software at Sun. "Sun has seen tremendous market demand for the Java Enterprise System since its release in early 2004, demonstrating that the value proposition of reducing infrastructure software cost and complexity is resonating with CIOs."
Sun Services Helps to Enable Fast and Simple Deployment for SaskTel
Sun Services helped ensure that SaskTel achieved this aggressive time-to-market. As the first step to implementing the Java Enterprise System, SaskTel utilized a two-day architecture workshop from Sun Services, a standard service included for enterprises with more than 1,000 employees, to identify business and technology requirements, plot an implementation road map and build an overarching architecture design for the solution.
