Ioline Develops FlexJet Inkjet Printer with Nucleus PLUS Real-Time Kernel

7/21/2004 - Accelerated Technology(r), the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics Corporation, announced that its Nucleus(r) PLUS real-time kernel has been used by Ioline Corporation to develop the FlexJet(tm) inkjet printer designed specifically for apparel manufacturers.

The FlexJet is the first upgradeable high-speed, wide-format inkjet printer designed specifically for the intricate marker-making needs of apparel manufacturers. The FlexJet prints paper patterns or markers for sewn garment production. The apparel manufacturer pins the markers, which can run as long as 100 feet, to stacks of cloth stretched over tables of the same length. Workers then cut along the printed outlines thus cutting the cloth underneath into the shapes needed to make a garment. The stacks of cloth pieces are then sent to the cutting room where they are sewn into garments.

"We needed a kernel that was reliable and had been tested on the Freescale PowerPC 855 processor. The Nucleus PLUS kernel caught our attention right away because of its technical merit and successful reputation in the embedded market," said Kevin Reed, engineering manager, Ioline Corporation.

Developers at Ioline decided to use the Nucleus PLUS kernel because it is a reliable and robust real-time kernel that is proven in a variety of embedded applications. Other enticing features of the Nucleus software package include the open and well-documented source code and no-royalty fees business model. The Nucleus PLUS kernel is also portable, highly optimized and scalable-it can be scaled down to as small as 17KB, for both code and data, on the Freescale PowerPC 855 processor.

Accelerated Technology is known in the embedded industry for its dedicated technical support team that typically responds to customers within 24 hours. "Accelerated Technology's technical support is fantastic. We were never disappointed when we had a question and the group always came through for us quickly when we were in a pinch," said Reed.

"The Nucleus kernel is widely used in office applications due to the robust nature and scalable footprint of the real-time kernel," said Robert Day, director of marketing, Embedded Systems Division, Mentor Graphics. "Its use in the FlexJet printer offered Ioline the reliability and support they required from an RTOS and its supplier."
