7/20/2004 - BMC Software, Inc. [NYSE: BMC], a leading provider of enterprise management solutions, detailed its product integration plans for Marimba, a software change and configuration management provider acquired by BMC Software on July 15, 2004. Marimba products provide new and extended capabilities to BMC Software's Business Service Management (BSM) strategy in three key areas: change and configuration management, security management and infrastructure management.
Integration of the Marimba products with existing BMC Software solutions has already begun. For example, Marimba's policy-based configuration capabilities and Remedy® Asset Management and Remedy Change Management are integrated today. Other Marimba technologies will be leveraged through future integrations with BMC Software solutions, including PATROL® infrastructure and application management solutions, BMC Service Impact Manager, and CONTROL-SA® identity management solution. The aggressive integration process strengthens BMC Software's BSM strategy, enabling enterprises to rapidly respond to changing business requirements by re-purposing, re-provisioning and updating IT resources to achieve required IT configurations.

Delivering on Change and Configuration Management Strategy
With today's announcement, BMC Software is delivering on the first new element of its unified change and configuration management (CCM) strategy announced last month (See June 28 release, "BMC Software to Deliver New Solutions that Create Industry's Most Holistic View of Change and Configuration Management"). BMC Software's CCM solutions are designed to help accelerate BSM implementation by enabling customers to identify and manage changes and configurations in the IT environment and therefore respond more effectively to changing business and IT requirements. The elements of the CCM strategy include policy-based configuration automation; business-aware discovery and detection; process-based change management; and an open-architecture Configuration Management Database (CMDB). Marimba and BMC Software solutions are integrated to deliver the policy-based configuration automation elements of the CCM strategy by:

Expanding Infrastructure and Security Management Capabilities
Marimba's management products are built on an efficient, secure, reliable, scalable http(s)-based infrastructure that can traverse firewalls and integrate with load balancers. Marimba's provisioning and discovery capabilities augment BMC Software's core automation functions within the server and data center management environments, enabling administrators to quickly respond to performance degradation by reconfiguring or reprovisioning systems. In addition, the desktop and mobile device management capabilities from Marimba further extend BMC Software's infrastructure management capabilities across the entire spectrum of the enterprise - from the mainframe to distributed servers to mobile devices.
Marimba's security management solution, Marimba Patch Management, strengthens BMC Software's security management capabilities by enabling enterprises to automatically identify and quickly deliver missing patches and fixes to thousands of end-points, across heterogeneous operating environments. Integration of Marimba Patch Management with BMC Software solutions will address remediation for the most common vulnerability sources identified by Gartner - missing patches, unnecessary applications and services, access control loopholes, and mis-configurations. The first integrations with Marimba Patch Management, planned for the first half of 2005, will be with the Remedy IT Service Management suite, including Remedy Help Desk, Remedy Asset Management, and Remedy Change Management. Future integrations are planned with CONTROL-SA identity management and PATROL infrastructure and application management solutions.
