7/9/2004 - Trolltech, a leader in cross-platform development frameworks, announced the first Qt 4 Technical Preview. Qt 4, the next major release of the popular cross-platform C++ application framework, is scheduled for final release in late Q1, 2005.
"Qt 4 will be a significant step in the evolution of Qt software, making it much easier for developers to create elegant, cross-platform applications," said Matthias Ettrich, director of software tools development at Trolltech."We are previewing some key technologies in order to provide our customers and the open source community with an opportunity to give early feedback."
The Key Technologies
The five new technologies, codenamed Arthur, Scribe, Interview, Tulip, and Mainwindow, that are being incorporated into the next major version of Qt 4.0. The technologies are:
Compatibility with Qt 3:
In order to minimize the work to migrate to Qt 4, Trolltech will provide comprehensive porting documents, tools and libraries. Most importantly, Qt 4 will provide an extension library that applications based on Qt 3 can link against to use obsolete classes. Using a separate library allows us to provide more compatibility than ever before, without bloating the Qt library with redundant functionality. This also means that developers can gradually begin to take advantage of Qt 4 features while continuing to use familiar Qt 3 functionality.
The first Qt 4 Technology Preview is licensed under a non-commercial, free of charge license. It can be downloaded from the Trolltech Website at www.trolltech.com. The first Qt 4 beta release, and all subsequent Qt 4 releases will be licensed under Trolltech's standard dual-licensing model.
Depending on the feedback from this Technology Preview, our goal is to provide a second Qt 4 Technology Preview in Q3 2004, enter the beta phase in Q4 2004, and release the final Qt 4 in late Q1 2005.
