Altera's New Cyclone II FPGAs Receive Support of Leading EDA Vendors

6/30/2004 - Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) announced support from leading EDA vendors for its new CycloneTM II devices, the lowest cost FPGAs ever. Altera’s collaboration with its EDA partners ensures that customers who traditionally target ASICs can now start Cyclone II designs immediately. Cyclone II devices offer 30 percent lower cost and more than three times the logic density than its predecessor, offering designers a unique combination of density, price and performance.

“Cyclone II devices extend the power and density range of our low-cost FPGA series and offer our customers a low-cost advantage to ASICs,” said Tim Southgate, Altera’s vice president of software and tools marketing. “The reliable and timely support from these vendors guarantees that our customers can quickly target Cyclone II devices with their existing tool set for those applications where a low-end ASIC would traditionally be required.”

Support from Leading EDA Vendors
“The Cadence IncisiveTM unified simulator and Allegro® system interconnect design platform, coupled with Altera’s Cyclone II FPGAs, allow design teams to increase their productivity early on in the design cycle,” said Charlie Giorgetti, corporate vice president and general manager of the silicon-package-board business unit at Cadence®. “Cyclone II customers using Cadence technology will be able to compress verification time and overcome the inherent challenges of high-speed system interconnect design, achieving faster time-to-market and competitive pricing.”

“Altera’s new Cyclone II high-density, low-cost FPGAs are further expanding the market for programmable logic devices,” said Simon Bloch, general manager, design creation and synthesis division, Mentor Graphics. “They are a viable alternative for high-volume production applications and, as such, benefit from a tightly integrated development environment. Mentor Graphics and Altera have collaborated to align silicon and software tool capabilities and provide a highly efficient and productive design solution.”

“We believe the new Cyclone II family delivers price and performance that will open up new applications previously only served by ASICs,” said Jeff Garrison, director of FPGA products at Synplicity. “We have collaborated closely with Altera on the Cyclone II product in order to deliver full support upon its release. For the Cyclone II family we developed new area optimizations which translate directly into cost savings.”

“Through our strong relationship with Altera, we have ensured that our Discovery verification and Galaxy implementation platforms, especially DC FPGA synthesis, will provide full support for Altera’s PLDs, including the new Cyclone II family,” said Lonn Fiance, director of strategic alliances at Synopsys.

Pricing and Availability
The Cyclone II device family is supported by the Cadence NC-Sim version 5.1; Mentor Graphics Precision RTL Synthesis version 2004a update 1 and ModelSim version 5.8c; Synopsys VCS version 7.1.1, Scirocco version 2002.06, and PrimeTime version 2003.03; and Synplicity Synplify and Synplify Pro version 7.6.1 software.

Quartus® II version 4.1 design software is now available to all customers on active subscription. The annual subscription for the Altera design software is $2,000 for a node-locked PC license, which includes full-featured Quartus II design software, ModelSim Altera Edition from Mentor Graphics, and 12 months of software upgrades. New or existing customers may obtain a software subscription at the Altera eStore at or from Altera distributors worldwide.

About Cyclone II Devices
The second generation of Altera’s industry-leading, low-cost Cyclone FPGAs, Cyclone II devices offer 30 percent lower cost and more than three times the density of the first generation devices, extending Altera’s leadership in the low-cost FPGA market. In addition, the fastest Cyclone II devices are more than 50 percent faster than the nearest low-cost FPGA competitor. Leveraging the same customer-driven product definition process that has resulted in the overwhelming success of the original Cyclone family, Cyclone II devices offer the optimal combination of density and performance at the lowest cost. They also offer an expanded suite of features that will enable designers to leverage programmable logic flexibility in systems that have traditionally required low- to mid-density ASICs.
