6/29/2004 - JBoss®, Inc., provider of the most popular JavaTM application server, and Sleepycat Software, Inc., makers of Berkeley DB, announced a developer version of JBossCacheTM integrated with Berkeley DB Java Edition. With JBossCache providing rapid access to elements in memory and Berkeley DB Java Edition as a reliable storage engine, developers now have an optimized solution that delivers high performance, transactional integrity, persistence and recoverability to Java applications.
"JBoss is driving improved J2EE application performance with innovative caching techniques such as with JBossCache and the Berkeley DB Java Edition," said Pierre Fricke, vice president, Application and Integration Infrastructure, DH Brown.
Berkeley DB Java Edition will be integrated and bundled with JBossCache 1.1, the latest version, which is ideal for developers and OEMs who require replication in addition to transactional persistence without the need for an external database. JBossCache provides a first-level cache and allows persistence of components into Berkeley DB Java Edition as a second-level cache. Loading and storing objects to and from the database is completely transparent, eliminating the need for developers to write their own persistence implementation into the application. Moreover, more elements can be stored in the cache for rapid access.
"JBoss has always focused on delivering products that take advantage of the latest technologies. We did this with the initial release of JBossCache, which implements an aspect-oriented programming (AOP) framework to significantly improve replication and speed performance,” said Marc Fleury, CEO of JBoss, Inc. “Now, with the integration of Sleepycat’s robust transactional storage engine, JBoss is taking another significant step to improve the reliability and performance of JBossCache for Java developers."
"Berkeley DB Java Edition complements JBossCache perfectly by providing fast, reliable and recoverable persistence in a pre-integrated package” said Mike Olson, president and CEO of Sleepycat Software. “We believe the combination provides compelling value for Java developers building large-scale, mission-critical applications requiring high performance, availability and data integrity."
Whether used on the JBoss Application Server, another application server or on its own, JBossCache performs basic functionality such as locking, replication and transaction management, all of which can be configured. JBossCache features a tree-structured replicated transactional cache, which can be used for replication of any plain old Java object (POJO). Auto-detection of modifications to POJOs substantially cuts down on network communication, resulting in improved performance and speed. Berkeley DB Java Edition is a high performance, pure Java database featuring full ACID transactions and recovery for high reliability, record-level locking for high concurrency, schema neutrality for data storage in its native format, and zero administration for low cost of ownership. Berkeley DB Java Edition takes advantage of Java’s portability and services such as deeply integrated threading and NIO. Berkeley DB Java Edition includes full source code for easier integration and debugging. Berkeley DB Java Edition is an authorized Java PoweredTM product technology.
