Datasound Laboratories Starts New Custom Design Division

6/25/2004 - Hertfordshire-based Datasound Laboratories (DSL) has announced it is to launch a new custom design division, helping resource-strapped manufacturers cut time to market. It will offer a custom electronic design service focused on application specific, cost optimised, single board solutions.

DSL, one of the UK’s leading specialist suppliers of embedded computing solutions to the OEM market, has made the decision to focus on custom design because it believes many companies lack the in-house resources and skills. It hopes to double its workforce over the next eighteen months to cope with the demand for custom design work.

Derek Carpenter, Managing Director, DSL said, “Outsourcing custom design work makes increasing sense for put-upon manufacturers. As businesses expand they frequently do not have the capacity to take on design work, and with pressure to bring products to market quicker ever-growing, outsourcing makes perfect sense.”

“Historically OEMs have wanted standard solutions, particularly in the PC/104 format. However, we began to realise that more and more people were demanding a made-to-measure approach, rather than off-the-shelf solutions, so we established our custom design division.”

DSL engineers are able to bring products to market in around half the time an in-house team might take, and as a specialist can add value in many other areas too. Product knowledge is second to none, relationships with chip manufacturers are strong and as a specialist DSL is aware of all the issues and market changes that a specific market sector-focussed manufacturer just wouldn’t know.

Malcolm Penn, CEO of Future Horizons, Europe's leading semiconductor analyst house said: "The pressures on organisations to turnaround products quickly is immense. Outsourcing can take the strain from the in-house team, who often do not have the time to devote to design."
