6/24/2004 - Paradyne (NASDAQ: PDYN), a leading provider of broadband voice, data and video network access solutions, announced that Puerto Rico Telephone (PRT) has selected Paradyne as its primary provider of DSL access equipment for residential broadband deployments. The ninth largest telephone company in the United States, and 52% owned by Verizon International, PRT has placed an order for Paradyne Broadband Access Concentrators built primarily with standards-based ADSL2+ and complemented with Paradyne's patented ReachDSL for total market coverage.
PRT represents one of the first major incumbent telephone companies in the U.S. to launch ADSL2+, the latest DSL standards breakthrough that effectively increases the connection speed over 24 Mbps over a normal two-wire telephone line. ADSL2+ is considered a breakthrough technology for telephone companies because the capacity of the broadband connection is sufficient for delivery of digital television service, in addition to high-speed Internet and Voice over IP on the same line.
"Paradyne has proven to us their industry leadership in broadband access over telephone lines. PRT has successfully deployed thousands of ReachDSL lines over the past two years and we are now seeing great success with the rollout of ADSL2+ technology," said Gary Butler, chief operations officer at PRT. "Delivery of over 24 Mbps of bandwidth to residential customers opens new markets to us, and we are excited about the results we're seeing."
"Paradyne is proud of the success we've shared with Puerto Rico Telephone on the rollout of ReachDSL to eliminate costly service and installation headaches," said Sean Belanger, president and CEO of Paradyne. "The powerful combination of ADSL2+ and ReachDSL represents a solid broadband access strategy, and we look forward to supporting PRT for the years ahead with their deployment plans."
PRT's thirty-thousand line order, scheduled for delivery in the second and third quarters of 2004, includes Paradyne's large chasses Broadband Access Concentrators for deployment throughout the incumbent carrier's network infrastructure, representing a significant footprint win for Paradyne.
