6/24/2004 - MontaVista Software Inc. announced that nine global Tier 1 Network Equipment Providers (NEPs) are actively using MontaVista® Linux ® Carrier Grade Edition as a preferred development platform for advanced communication products. These firms are some of the world’s largest network equipment providers and include Alcatel, Agilent UK, Ericsson, NEC, Nokia, and Samsung.
MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) is an industry standard COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) carrier-grade Linux product that provides specific functionality for telecommunications and data communications with requirements for high availability, fault management and real-time performance.
“With a growing number of major design wins from leading equipment manufacturers over the last few years, MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition has gained strong acceptance in the telecommunications industry,” said Kelly Herrell, senior vice president, Strategic Operations, MontaVista Software. “ CGE is already being deployed into the network by leading network equipment providers. Now, with the gradual strengthening of the global economy, we are adding new customers and expanding our partner ecosystem.”
CGE offers significant advantages beyond standard or “enterprise” Linux. It is designed specifically to address the needs of network communications equipment providers who face strict requirements for high reliability, availability, and scalability in addition to ever-increasing time-to-market pressures.
“Network communications equipment providers are pushing for a robust and flexible operating system, with strong networking capabilities, scalability, and a high level of service reliability, ” said Stacey Quandt, Quandt Analytics. “The availability of an open source carrier-class Linux platform that addresses the requirements of the telecommunications industry is a major step that will drive innovation in the sector.”
“MontaVista Software has been at the forefront of the Carrier Grade Linux initiative from its inception,” said Stuart Cohen, CEO of OSDL. “ OSDL is delighted to see growing evidence of the momentum towards a standards-based platform. We believe that the recovery in the telecom market is only strengthening this trend.”
“We selected this new platform that is based on open standards to shorten the development time and reduce total costs,” said Takatoshi Numasato, senior general manager of the Mobile Network Operation Unit, NEC. “ Using MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition, which provides a level of reliability unattainable so far with any other OS, along with our own high availability middleware, enabled us to build a platform that can truly support carrier-grade services.”
“For nearly two years, Alcatel has been working together with MontaVista Software in order to provide operators with a reliable and open platform enabling powerful fixed, mobile and converged end-user centric applications,” declared Jean-Michel Cornille, president of Alcatel’s mobile solutions activities. “Today, Alcatel is ideally positioned to turn the ‘five 9s’* reliability figure of MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition into true added value for operators and end-users alike.”
