UMUC Runs Global PeopleSoft Implementation with Sun UltraSPARC, Solars

6/18/2004 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) announced that the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) chose Sun's UltraSPARC systems based on the highly reliable, secure, and industrial-strength Solaris Operating System to run its global PeopleSoft implementation. This two-year project supported by Sun Services allows UMUC to consolidate its three disparate systems into one central IT database, to manage all financial, HR, and student administration functions globally. Utilizing its Sun and PeopleSoft products, UMUC is now able to expand their business and academic operations with a highly scalable and reliable infrastructure. The result gives students, faculty, and staff easier and faster access to online tools and information.

The UMUC solution consists of a Sun Fire 15K server running the Solaris OS in a large cluster/SAN solution with several smaller Sun Fire Servers, Sun StorEdge 6320 arrays, L700 Tape Backup, and PeopleSoft software. UMUC selected Sun Services to lead the architecture design, planning and implementation effort. "To be a truly global institution, we needed to be able to provide 24/7 accessibility to all our services over the Web," said Vincent Conti, Chief Financial Officer, UMUC. "We chose Sun because it offers us a low-cost, end-to-end solution with the performance, scalability and flexibility we need. The expertise brought by Sun Services to support the entire implementation effort, along with the alliance between Sun and PeopleSoft, offered additional assurance of Sun's ongoing commitment to our business success. We consider Sun to be a UMUC partner rather than a vendor."

Phase one of this multi-year, multi-million dollar project is now underway. While UMUC will continue to offer coursework in traditional classrooms on local campuses, it continues to build out its Distance Education course portfolio with innovative programs and services via the web. Curriculum is tailored to working adults and U.S. Armed Forces personnel stationed abroad. The award-winning university began offering distance learning in 1972 and now boasts 87,000 online students in more than 28 countries. Since 1999, the University has experienced annual growth of 5-10 percent, and UMUC expects to increase its online student base to 100,000 by 2005.

"The University of Maryland University College and Sun share a common vision that Life Long Learning is critical to individuals of all ages throughout the world," said Kim Jones, vice president, Global Education and Research, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "A successful distance education offering, like the one at the University of Maryland University College, requires true collaboration in order to serve the wide-variety of student needs around the globe. Sun worked closely with the university to address these needs by deploying a total integrated solution of products, software and services for their growing online student population."

At UMUC, all financial applications -- including tuition, scholarships and grants -- as well as HR activities are now managed in one centralized, global environment. The interactive classroom experience is provided by WebTycho, the University's state-of-the-art distance education software which runs on the Solaris OS from a number of Sun Fire V880 and V240 UltraSPARC processor-based servers and Sun StorEdge storage systems. The reliability and availability of Sun's UltraSPARC systems, combined with the high performance Solaris OS gives UMUC the platform it needs to help provide its students with always on access to more than 500 courses and 80 undergraduate and graduate certificate and degree programs from anywhere in the world.

Sun and PeopleSoft provided UMUC the integrated technology needed to deliver administrative and academic tools together in one solution. Sun and PeopleSoft have been working together for more than 10 years to offer solutions for their customers. PeopleSoft's integrated best-of-breed applications run on Sun systems which are designed to provide a strong foundation for mission-critical applications. UMUC has joined the ranks of more than 1,400 customers who have chosen the Sun/PeopleSoft offering.
