Accelerated Technology, Atsana Enable Programmable Multimedia Mobile Apps

6/17/2004 - Accelerated Technology(r), the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT), announced that the Nucleus(r) Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) and associated middleware, widely deployed in mobile handsets, have been integrated with the J2211 system-on-a-chip (SOC) from Atsana Semiconductor Corporation. This integration will give mobile phone original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and third-party developers a full-featured, high-performance solution in which to program multimedia functions such as a video camcorder, video playback, video on demand (VOD), megapixel digital still camera, graphics and audio functions into mobile phones.

Based on an ARM9 RISC processor, Atsana's J2211 SOC provides a powerful yet fully programmable solution for video, image audio and graphics processing. The low power, high performance characteristics of the J2211 SOC, combined with the scalable and solid Nucleus RTOS, will give mobile phone developers the robust solution they need to design feature-rich multimedia capabilities on their mobile devices.

The Nucleus PLUS kernel, the basis for the Nucleus RTOS family of products, is ideal for mobile telephony and has been used in hundreds of handset designs to date. The reliability of the Nucleus PLUS kernel, the breadth of middleware available and the high performance features have made the Nucleus PLUS kernel the most widely deployed source code, royalty-free RTOS solution.

"The Nucleus RTOS and middleware development environment provides Atsana and its partners a foundation to rapidly develop and deploy best-in-class multimedia video, imaging and graphics applications for mobile handsets," said Vivek Chhabra, Head of Software Partnerships, Atsana. "We adopted the royalty-free Nucleus RTOS as one of the solutions for our family of media processors because of its high performance, wide acceptance and features support targeted at mobile environments."

"In addition to making rich multimedia possible, the J2211 SOC consumes little power and is low cost. This combination of high performance at low cost makes the J2211 ideal for the high-volume mobile multimedia devices at which it is targeted," said Robert Day, director of marketing, Mentor Graphics Embedded Systems Division. "Adding support of the stable royalty-free Nucleus RTOS and middleware provides a very compelling solution for handset original design manufacturers (ODM) and OEMs."
