6/16/2004 - Building on its leadership position in timing solutions, IDTTM (Integrated Device Technology, Inc.; Nasdaq: IDTI) introduced a new family of highly versatile programmable timing devices targeting a wide range of applications in the communications, storage, digital consumer and industrial markets. The innovative VersaTimeTM product family represents the industry’s first complete portfolio of programmable skew and zero-delay buffers with non-volatile programming capability, allowing customers to consolidate and replace the large number of dedicated fixed function clock devices used today to build timing networks. In addition, the VersaTime programmable clock family comprises the first timing products to offer an IEEE 1149.1a compliant JTAG interface that not only enables its inclusion in design-for-test (DFT) infrastructure but also supports device programming within the same scan chain. This innovation empowers customers to program and test their timing networks using the same infrastructure already in place for other devices, such as programmable logic and non-volatile memory. The support for in-system programming provides superior flexibility by allowing device configuration at any point in a product’s life cycle.
“The VersaTime programmable clocks were developed in response to feedback from designers, test engineers and supply-chain managers, who asked that we address a myriad of industry challenges that have not been satisfied by other vendors to date,” said Sean Fan, director of marketing for the communications timing solutions and telecom products at IDT. “First, there are a large number of fixed function timing devices on the market, often with very similar functionality. It’s very time consuming for designers to sort through all these options and difficult to manage the resulting multitude of devices within the supply chain. With the IDT VersaTime programmable clocks, the same device can be used for a number of different applications, significantly reducing inventory-management complexity. Second, alternative devices are not DFT friendly and existing programming methods are not well suited for use during the manufacturing stage. Our devices can be configured and re-configured at any stage, whether on the bench, at the manufacturer or in the field.”
Unlike alternative products, the IDT VersaTime programmable clocks do not compromise on jitter performance. The new family achieves low cycle-to-cycle jitter of less than 75ps peak to peak (max value with outputs at the same level) and 100ps peak to peak (max value with outputs at different levels), numbers that are less than half those of competing solutions.
“Other timing devices have offered limited programming options at a cost,” Fan added. “This first group of VersaTime programmable clocks offers more flexibility and better performance at an attractive price point. Going forward, we plan to broaden the VersaTime programmable clock portfolio by building upon our innovation in programming versatility, DFT enhancement and performance.”
The flexibility of the VersaTime programmable clocks allow the devices to be used for a combination of clock generation and distribution functions. A JTAG or I2C bus serial interface is provided for device programming, and an internal EEPROM allows the user to save and restore the configuration of the device. The family’s DFT capability eliminates the need for a dedicated infrastructure, currently needed to create “boundary scan equivalent” circuits for timing devices. Bank-selectable signal translation is also provided, eliminating the need for additional timing devices to interface between various I/O types.
Pricing for the new IDT VersaTime programmable clocks starts at $2.95 each in 10,000-unit quantities. Programming kits, software and development tools are available. Production quantities of the new devices are available now.
