6/14/2004 - HP announced enhancements to the HP ProtectTools security solutions portfolio with a client console application that provides convenient access to security features on desktop and notebook PCs.
HP ProtectTools Security Manager helps customers get more security value from a PC equipped with hardware security features, including an integrated, or add-on Smart Card reader, an embedded security chip designed to the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) standard, as well as a host of firmware features that protect a computer system.
"Every day our business customers face new and more complex security threats that jeopardize their critical data and valuable intellectual property," said Tony Redmond, chief technology officer, HP Services. "HP is focused on engineering trustworthy computing solutions to help protect our customers' assets against unauthorized access. The suite of HP ProtectTools offerings is just one example of how HP uses the breadth of its hardware, software and services expertise to help safeguard its customers' businesses."
HP ProtectTools Security Manager
The HP ProtectTools Security Manager provides a single console that serves as the foundation for existing and future HP ProtectTools client security solutions on select HP desktop and notebook business PCs. The HP ProtectTools Security Manager is a software application that adds an easy-to-use interface into the Microsoft® Windows® control panel allowing for access to the full breadth of HP security capabilities designed to help protect against unauthorized access to the PC, networks and business-critical data.
The HP ProtectTools Security Manager provides integrated access to Smart Card and embedded security features, and the flexible design of the application enables easy integration of future security modules as HP continues to expand its security portfolio.
HP ProtectTools Security Manager is available today for download online for select HP business notebooks. Support for additional platforms, including business desktop and workstation PCs, is expected to be available this summer.
Smart Card and Embedded Security for HP ProtectTools
Available on HP business notebooks since last year, the patented Smart Card security solution for ProtectTools provides Smart Card user authentication both in Windows and the pre-boot environment. The ProtectTools Smart Card solution provides enhanced Smart Card authentication through multiple layers of security that can protect from the moment PC power is turned on.
The solution includes a multi-level authentication mechanism that requires a two-factor authentication process: a Smart Card (something you have) and a PIN (something you know). The ProtectTools Smart Card security solution provides three complementary security features for HP PCs:
HP ProtectTools Embedded Security, also introduced last summer, is a hardware and software solution built on a security chip available on select HP business desktop and notebook PCs. The embedded security chip, designed to the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) standard, incorporates core security elements into a single, independent hardware-based subsystem. Embedded Security uses a combination of hardware and software features to establish platform identity for authentication and protected storage for sensitive user data and credentials. Embedded Security includes both hardware-protected storage of sensitive data as well as hardware-protected key generation, decryption, digital signature operations, and more.
HP ProtectTools for Microsoft Products
HP's security offering also includes the HP ProtectTools for Microsoft products software suite, which was developed in partnership with Microsoft to integrate seamlessly into Microsoft's standard products, enhancing their security functionality. These solutions address customer requirements for secure e-mail, strong user authentication, secure import and export of data from multiple sources, secure terminal server access to resources, and data security for mobile devices.
