6/14/2004 - Ampro Computers, Inc., the inventor and leading supplier of rugged PC/104 and EBX single board computers for non-backplane embedded systems, announced the Ampro ETX 700 computer-on-module (COM) enabling system OEMs to use ETX form factor modules in applications that exist in harsh environments. This announcement means that manufacturers of medical, military, transportation and industrial products, among others, can now successfully use ETX-based designs for applications which require industrial temperature specifications as well as resistance to shock, vibration and humid and corrosive conditions. Featuring low-power Intel® Pentium® III and Celeron® processors, the Ampro ETX 700 module was designed from the ground up for use in these rugged environments. See details at http://www.ampro.com/html/ETX_700.html.
"Ampro is responding to an outcry for a rugged, reliable ETX module," said Joanne Mumola Williams, president and CEO of Ampro. "We used our time-tested PC/104 and EBX design and manufacturing technology to build a truly rugged ETX product that operates across an extended -40° to +85°C temperature range, provides high resistance to vibration and shock, and is available with conformal coating. Ampro's 3-year warranty even applies to conformally-coated units."
"Now that military, medical, and industrial OEMs are investigating ETX-based system designs, the time is right for the first rugged ETX module," said Eric Gulliksen, market analyst at Venture Development Corporation (VDC). "Ampro brings a tremendous amount of rugged know-how and credibility to the ETX market, drawing upon its history with rugged PC/104 and EBX products."
"One of the techniques Ampro employs in its new rugged ETX 700 board is the use of a 50% thicker PCB, the same thickness as our LittleBoardTM and EnCoreTM products," said Paul Rosenfeld, CTO of Ampro. "The thicker board provides extra rigidity needed to avoid flexing the board during installation on a baseboard as well as extra copper to smoothly dissipate heat throughout the module. Ampro uses temperature and voltage margin testing early and throughout the design phase to ensure that our new rugged products meet the demands of rugged applications."
Besides board thickness, Ampro has re-used other techniques from its earlier single board computer designs to achieve ruggedness. About the Ampro ETX 700
The Ampro ETX 700 module features a choice of 933MHz Low Voltage Pentium III, 650MHz Low Voltage Celeron, or 400MHz Ultra Low Voltage Celeron processor, plus all the component subsystems expected in a state-of-the-art COMs module. Supporting up to 512MB RAM, the module also includes thermal monitoring and power management functions. Onboard I/O interfaces include 10/100BaseT Ethernet controller and an advanced AGP 4X video controller with CRT and flat panel support through the standard baseboard LVDS interfaces. Up to 32MB of video memory are accessible through the Unified Memory Architecture. Other onboard controllers provide AC97 sound, 4x USB, 2x full modem TTL serial ports (RS232/422/485 transceivers are added on the baseboard) and all standard PC architecture elements. Full PCI and ISA expansion capability are provided to the baseboard. Ampro offers a 3-year warranty that covers optional extended temperature testing (ETT) and conformal coating, and a written 5-year lifecycle policy, making it the best value ETX module for high-performance rugged applications.
About Ampro Computers, Inc.
Ampro Computers, Inc. is the leading global provider of modular embedded computing solutions for OEM applications. Ampro's mission is to provide time saving solutions for embedded systems designers that accelerate the product deployment process. Ampro pioneered the embedded PC industry creating the popular PC/104 and EBX standards. The EnCore and ETX families are Computers-on-Modules (COMs) which enables designers to obtain all the benefits of an off-the-shelf CPU solution while maintaining the flexibility of a full custom design. In addition to EnCore and ETX, Ampro offers three product lines: PC/104-compatible CoreModule CPUs and MiniModule expansion products, and EBX form factor LittleBoard single-board computers (SBCs). Ampro was awarded Electronique magazine's "Electron d'Or 2002" for subsystems for the EnCore product line. For more information about Ampro Computers, please visit http://www.ampro.com.
