X-Digital Selects Conexant's Set-top Box Chipsets for DVB Receivers

6/14/2004 - Conexant Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CNXT), the worldwide leader in semiconductor solutions for broadband communications, enterprise networks and the digital home, announced that X-Digital Systems, Inc. (XDS), a leading developer of electronic distribution, satellite transmission, and audio systems, has chosen the company’s CX24109 satellite tuner and CX24143 MPEG decoder semiconductor solutions for its next-generation digital video broadcast (DVB) set-top box (STB). X-Digital’s new STB will allow the distribution of video, music and data to TVs and stereos in a home, school, airport terminal or other business settings.

“We are pleased that X-Digital recognized the value of our complete DVB product line, and chose our solutions for their next-generation set-top box,” said Jeff Crosby, vice president of Set-top Box Products for Conexant. “The high level of integration and multi-functional capabilities of our satellite set-top box chipset will provide X-Digital with a cost effective, high- performance solution to meet their market needs.”

“Our goal is to create low-cost products that support the distribution of multimedia content over home and business networks,” said Ian Lerner, president of X-Digital Systems. “The flexibility and programmability of Conexant’s highly integrated chipsets allow us to reduce the development time, cost and risk associated with these complex products.”

X-Digital's low-cost and high volume consumer products make it possible to broadcast the same content to multiple locations or to output specific content live or on-demand, at each location. Production of their new set-top DVB receiver is scheduled for January 2005, with distribution planned for the first quarter of 2005. The STB will be manufactured in China for sale in local and international markets.

Conexant’s CX24109 is the industry’s most highly integrated digital satellite tuner for set-top boxes, digital video, audio, and data receiver applications. It is based on a direct-conversion, Zero-IF architecture, which reduces the number of components required for operation. In addition, it includes an integrated low noise amplifier, an integrated variable baseband filter that provides optimal interference rejection, and an integrated local oscillator with on-chip voltage-controlled oscillator and synthesizer that further reduces the overall complete cost of the tuner portion of the set-top box.

The CX24143 DVB decoder features all of the major subsystems required to implement the core system and decoder electronics of a DVB-compliant free-to-air common interface (FTA-CI) STB. The solution consists of an MPEG-2 A/V decoder (Dolby Digital audio is optional), transport processor, a 32-bit RISC CPU, a hardware 2D graphics accelerator, TV encoder, QPSK demodulator, a video/graphics display compositing controller, and a set of peripheral I/O ports for set-top box front and back panel connectors. This high level of integration results in a very low-cost system bill-of-materials for FTA and FTA-CI STB markets worldwide.
