PMC-Sierra's 4G Fibre Channel Achieves with Seagate Hard Disk Drives

6/10/2004 - PMC-Sierra (Nasdaq:PMCS - News) announced that it has achieved 4.25 Gbit/s Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FCAL) interoperability between Seagate Technology's Cheetah 4G Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and PMC-Sierra's PM8377 PBC 4x4G 4G Fibre Channel (FC) Intelligent Port Bypass Controller. The successful interoperability represents a significant milestone in providing server and storage system equipment manufacturers a working system architecture solution that will enable them to exploit the performance benefits of 4G Fibre Channel. System designers will now be able to accelerate their 4G FCAL development cycles and bring to market high performance storage systems that meet the growing data storage requirements of today's enterprises.

Test Card Showcases 4.25 Gbit/s FCAL Interoperability
Seagate and PMC-Sierra have worked together to deliver a Test Card (T-Card) platform that showcases successful FCAL interoperability between PMC-Sierra's intelligent 4G FC PBCs and Seagate's Cheetah 4G FC HDDs. The interoperability testing used multiple different sources of FCAL frame generation between and through PMC-Sierra's PM8377 PBC 4x4G device and multiple Seagate Cheetah 4.25G FC HDDs. The successful results demonstrated completed 4.25 Gbit/s FCAL hardware exchanges between these two key system components. The T-Card provides server and storage system designers with a powerful platform that enables them to further test and analyze their specific FCAL systems.

"PMC-Sierra is focused on ensuring that storage system designers have interoperable components and the appropriate design tools to quickly bring 4G FC systems to market," said Mark Stibitz, vice president and general manager of PMC-Sierra's Enterprise Storage Division. "The Seagate and PMC-Sierra T-Card collaboration is a platform that will accelerate 4G FC system deployment."

"Seagate's Fibre Channel enterprise customers demand the highest levels of reliability and performance in our products and that has served as the fuel that has driven our technology leadership and innovation," said Gary Gentry, Seagate vice president, Strategic Marketing and Product Planning. "By ensuring interoperability with leading companies like PMC-Sierra, Seagate is leading the charge to 4G FC and, ultimately, our customers stand to benefit with working system solutions."
