6/8/2004 - Oracle Corporation, the world's largest enterprise software corporation, and Topspin Communications, the leader in switched computing, announced the results of its InfiniBand for Oracle® 10g software platform with BT Exact, BT's research, technology and IT division, one of Europe's leading telecommunications service providers. The results highlight the performance advantages of using InfiniBand versus traditional Gigabit Ethernet for connecting Oracle clients together with the database.
BT Exact used its transaction-intensive "Real World" application test suite to compare the performance of Oracle Net Services running over Topspin InfiniBand server switches versus Gigabit Ethernet interconnects. Oracle Net Services provides the critical link through which all queries and results flow between clients and the database. Both sets of tests ran on the same set of HP industry-standard ProLiant x86 Linux servers.
"The InfiniBand results in the application tier showed promise, with an average of 25 percent higher performance and a peak of 50 percent higher performance relative to the Gigabit Ethernet setup. We now plan to extend the same technology into Oracle cluster testing which is where we hope to see even more benefit," said David Butcher, Managing Director Customer Management, BT Exact. "We were happy to see that the Topspin InfiniBand switches and cards were seamless to setup and configure with Oracle 10g."
Both Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Application Server 10g include end-to-end support for InfiniBand, the new high-speed communications interface designed specifically for data center applications. Oracle worked with Topspin to develop a set of industry standard protocols ideally suited to Oracle to take advantage of InfiniBand's 10Gb/s throughput, low latency and low overhead I/O.
"Oracle Net Services over InfiniBand sets the stage for higher OLTP performance and lower interconnect cost and complexity for Oracle customers, particularly for transaction intensive users," said Howard Cohen, Vice President of Distributed Systems, Oracle Corporation. "Since most of our customers run some level of OLTP workload on the database, we see it having a broad benefit."
With Oracle supporting InfiniBand and every major system vendor planning to ship InfiniBand server switches this year, the environment is primed for broad adoption of the technology. "We're seeing interest across many industry segments in every geography," said Pat Conte, Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Field Operations, Topspin Communications. "BT's experience sets a precedent for other leading enterprise data centers around the world to benefit from InfiniBand in their data centers."
