PLX Teams with Vitesse for PCI Express and ASI TechOnline Webcast

6/7/2004 - PLX Technology (NASDAQ: PLXT,, the leading supplier of standard I/O interconnect silicon to the communications, server, storage, embedded-control, and consumer industries, announced it will team with Vitesse Semiconductor for a TechOnline ( Webcast on PCI ExpressTM (PCIe) technology and the Advanced Switching Interconnect (ASI). The Monday, June 7 (11:00 a.m. PST) PLX® Webcast, titled “PCI Express and Advanced Switching--Complementary Standards,” is structured to provide systems architects, including hardware and software developers, with a review of PCIe technology, along with a detailed description of the advanced capabilities of ASI and how the two standards can be combined into more advanced designs.

The Webcast, the latest in a series of PLX-presented TechOnline seminars, will discuss the details behind combining PCIe and ASI, and how PCIe can be expected to interconnect host and I/O subsystems with ASI as the eventual switching fabric solution in higher-end systems. The seminar also will review several mixed-topology examples made possible through the use of both standards.

“System manufacturers are coming to realize that PCIe and ASI aren’t competitive, but complementary interconnects that will co-exist in future storage and communications designs,” said John Gudmundson, senior product marketing manager at PLX and a co-presenter of next week’s TechOnline seminar. “ ’PCI Express and Advanced Switching-Complementary Standards’ blends PLX’s and Vitesse’s respective expertise into a comprehensive discussion that will enlighten listeners as to the current and future roles of PCI Express and ASI: Systems can start today with available PCIe solutions and migrate to a mixed topology with ASI as the switching fabric interconnect when it is available.”

Co-presenting the online seminar with Gudmundson is Gary Lee, director of switch fabric marketing at Vitesse and a 23-year veteran of the semiconductor industry. Lee has been involved in the development of several of Vitesse’s industry-leading switch-fabric switch sets.

Leveraging Expertise, Driving
As with PLX’s previous TechOnline Webcasts, the June 7 event leverages the company’s long, successful history in the I/O interconnect market as a worldwide provider of PCI-based solutions to an array of industries. This experience has been applied to the development of the company’s recently announced family PCIe switches and bridges (see announcement), currently being designed into systems. Through its PCIe efforts, PLX also is streamlining the migration of designs using PCI to those based on PCIe technology by working closely with board and system manufacturers to enhance their products.

Vitesse’s family of Advanced Switching Intelligent switch fabrics are designed to enhance the PCIe interconnect standard by providing an intelligent switch fabric and backplane interconnect to be used in applications such as storage, wireless, media gateways, router/switches, and Internet appliances. Vitesse is a key developer in the ASI-SIG and is actively involved in the development of the Advanced Switching specification.
