6/3/2004 - Two weeks after announcing a groundswell of support for the Solaris x86 Operating System (OS) with 15 new Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) announced the addition of two more OEMs, Dawning and Founder Technology Group. By teaming with two of China's leading computer companies, Sun will significantly broaden the reach of Solaris x86 platforms in China – one of the fastest growing sectors for PC and server unit shipments in the Asia Pacific region.
The collaboration with Dawning and Founder Technology Group also adds new certified systems for the growing list of applications supporting the Solaris x86 OS and gives end customers greater flexibility and choice in their Solaris x86 deployments at competitive price points. The server market in China shows strong growth and opportunity with over 21 percent more units shipped in 2003 than in the previous year (Gartner Server Forecast: Asia/Pacific, March 2004 Update, March 2004, J. Wu et al.). Additionally, today's announcement demonstrates the worldwide customer demand for the Solaris OS on AMD Opteron processor- and Intel Xeon processor-based systems and underscores Sun's commitment to working with its partners to seek new market opportunities with the reliable, secure, enterprise ready Solaris OS.
This week, Sun is sponsoring a Solaris x86 OS Partner Pavilion at the SunNetwork 2004 conference in Shanghai, PRC, June 2-3. Driven by the growing demand of the Solaris OS for AMD Opteron processor- and Intel Xeon processor-based systems from their customers and the opportunity to seek new market opportunities with the reliable, secure, enterprise ready Solaris OS, partners are showcasing their Solaris OS solutions and attendees have the opportunity to meet with Sun technical and sales representatives at the event.

"AMD Opteron processor-based Dawning servers running Solaris deliver the leading-edge performance of the AMD Opteron processor and the unique value of the Solaris OS with its solid performance, security, and availability at commodity prices."
The OEM program for Solaris x86 OS is a high ROI program since there is no cost involved for system builders to participate. OEMs are able to certify their systems using Sun's free Hardware Certification Test Suite. They can also license the Solaris OS for redistribution to customers under flexible general purpose or embedded use licensing. As part of the program, Sun provides worldwide backline support, contractual support at the development coding level, as well as low-cost training and free resources. OEMs can also participate in the Sun(sm) Software Express program for Solaris OS to preview the next-generation Solaris 10 OS and enable faster time-to-market with the latest cutting-edge technologies.
The Solaris OS Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) offers certification for system builders and Independent Hardware Vendors looking to leverage the Sun brand and growing market for the Solaris x86 platform. Customers can access the HCL at www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl to take advantage of a full range of drivers and system configurations that have been certified on Solaris x86, as well as a growing catalog of third-party and open-source applications.
