SPIRIT Gives Users Better Control with Voice Prompt for Electronic Devices

5/27/2004 - SPIRIT (www.spiritdsp.com), the biggest eXpressDSP software house in Europe (Texas Instruments processor sales data), introduces its new software product - voice prompt for home consumer electronics and portable devices.

As home appliances get smarter, user manuals are getting even thicker - users increasingly tend to skip everything that goes after chapter "How to get it working". A considerable number of powerful functions are lost to the customers due to lack of information. Efficiency of use suffers and tech support becomes more in demand and costly to manufacturers and suppliers. An efficient remedy to this problem is using a voice prompt assistant that gives context-dependent explanations and offers hints.

SPIRIT's Voice Prompt solution integrated into consumer electronics makes the perfect interactive user manual, an attractive value-add for small home appliances, television and audio equipment, and portable/mobile devices. When used in medical equipment, timely voice prompt can literally mean the difference between life and death.

The solution is based on the family of SPIRIT vocoders providing efficient speech compression and storage. Voice prompt messages are digitized, compressed, converted to desired digital format, and stored in flash memory to be played on request. Software vocoders from SPIRIT enable voice-prompting functionality for consumer devices by using the central DSP/RISC processor of the device. No additional hardware is required.

If the target device features include a video display of 100x100 resolution or better, Voice Prompt solution can be complemented with an animated assistant, a cartoon-like entity on the display. The assistant reads out voice prompt messages, gestures and changes its face expressions as appropriate.
