5/20/2004 - Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE: TEK), a leading worldwide provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation, announced the P6960 and P6980 high-density connectorless probes using new D-MaxTM probing technology for its TLA700 Series of logic analyzers. The new D-Max probing technology surpasses that of competing products with a similar profile by enabling leading channel density and signal integrity. The new probes provide a footprint 61% smaller than the previous generation, and the lowest capacitance rating available in the industry, typically 0.5 pF, to maintain the integrity of the signals being observed.
Designers developing high-speed computing, communication, and network device prototypes usually include probing footprints on their circuit designs. These footprints bring hundreds of connections to a central "probing" point to allow for troubleshooting and evaluation. As circuit boards continue to shrink in size, these test points must be reduced proportionately without adding costs to the prototype. Furthermore, it is critical that the method of accessing signals itself does not itself impact the measurement outcome.
Designers exploring advanced digital architectures turned to the industry's technology leader, Tektronix, for a solution to these challenges. Tektronix' pioneering D-Max probing technology dispenses with cumbersome connector housings while enhancing the reliability of the connection and minimizing the footprint-and the cost-of on-board probing.

Industry-Leading Channel Density Doesn't Trade Off Performance
Aimed at digital designers who must address today's multi-GHz bus speeds and commensurately tighter circuit design tolerances, the new probes provide the industry's densest channel count per unit area. It situates 34 clock and/or data channels in a footprint that is 61% smaller than that of its predecessor and significantly smaller than any other offering in the market. Most importantly, the small size and high density permit shorter traces and easier routing to probing sites, further conserving circuit board real estate.
Using the new D-Max probing technology, the P6960 and P6980 connectorless probes incorporate a durable new interconnect technology that ensures positive contact to board-mounted pads. The P6960 is a 34 channel probe, with single-ended data and differential clocks. The P6980 is also a 34 channel probe, but in addition to acquiring the clock signals differentially it also acquires the data channels differentially. The differential data acquisition capabilities make the P6980 probe suitable for the acquisition of very high speed signals.
