Enea Introduces OSE Epsilon RTOS for Renesas' SH-2 Embedded Processors

5/19/2004 - Enea Embedded Technology announced the availability of its OSE Epsilon real-time kernel and development tools for Renesasí SH-2 DSP family of embedded processors. OSE Epsilon on SH-2 enables the development of robust and reliable DSP and microcontroller-based applications with extremely compact application code and high performance. Applications based on the OSE Epsilon and SH-2 tandem typically include networking equipment, office automation equipment and consumer electronics.

OSE Epsilon is available for the complete Renesas SH76xx (SH2-DSP) family of highly integrated devices. The SH-2 embedded DSP family combines the functionality of a 32-bit SuperH RISC processor and a full-featured 16-bit digital signal processor in a single core. This enables designers to reduce design efforts for both hardware and software. OSE Epsilon is a very fast, small, low-cost RTOS for deeply embedded and SoC development. The fully pre-emptive real-time kernel is highly optimized for excellent processing power combined with an extremely small footprint (approximately 2 KB on SH-2 in a minimal configuration). Written completely in Assembler, OSE Epsilon achieves top performance, even in environments subject to tight memory constraints. It enables developers to keep application code as small and compact as possible.

OSE Epsilon further reduces software development efforts by offering an intuitive application programming interface and a highly efficient direct message-passing architecture. OSE Epsilon also incorporates built-in error handling for ensuring robust and reliable system design.

OSE Epsilon for SH-2 development tools includes an RTOS-aware system analysis and a profiling tool known as OSE Illuminator. It enables programmers to monitor, control and collect data for applications viewed as a sequence of events (such as context switches and message-passing between processes). OSE Epsilon is also available with an OSE Soft Kernel simulator that enables designers to develop their applications on a Windows® or SolarisTM host system without the physical presence of the target hardware. The OSE Epsilon kernel also offers network support, including TCP/IP, a web-server and Internet utilities.

The highly integrated embedded Renesas SH76xx processors (SH2-DSP family) are based on a 32-bit-microcontroller/DSP architecture that is ideally suited for applications that require both microcontroller and DSP processing. The SH-2 DSP series includes peripheral functions such as cache, X/Y-RAM, DMA controllers, timers, an interrupt controller, specific serial communication interfaces for interfacing with codecs, and I/O ports. An on-chip JTAG module makes debugging easy. The SH7615 includes an integrated Ethernet controller for network specific applications. Applications include VoIP/IP phones, Ethernet based appliances, LAN cards, PC peripherals and digital consumer solutions, such as digital cameras or MPEG coders and decoders.
