IONA Unveils Telecom Toolkit with Open Source TMF 814 Implementation

5/18/2004 - IONA® Technologies (NASDAQ: IONA), a world leader in high performance integration solutions for mission-critical IT environments, announced that the IONA Telecom ToolkitTM is available for download from the company's Web site.

The Telecom Toolkit builds on IONA's expertise in providing the telecommunications industry with standards-compliant integration solutions to give equipment manufacturers the right technology to bring new product to market as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. Carrier-grade TMF 814 and 3GPP implementations ensure CORBA® interoperability between element management software contained within the device and the network management software used by carriers at the operations level. Additionally, the Telecom Toolkit includes a network management framework with reference applications to simplify and accelerate development of industry-standard network, element and alarm management systems. Since IONA has made the source code available, and thus able to be modified, equipment manufacturers are better able to meet evolving industry demands while remaining compliant to one of the most widely adopted standards within the telecommunications industry.

"IONA has long been a recognized leader in providing the telecommunications industry with the standards-based integration and connectivity solutions required to successfully compete in a constantly evolving market," explained Scott Devens, vice president of products, IONA Technologies. "With the availability of the Telecom Toolkit, we demonstrate our ability to offer telecommunications equipment manufacturers the integration technology they require to meet not only their needs, but ultimately the needs of the carrier market into which they sell."

Beginning with deregulation in the 1980s, telecommunications carriers have faced increasing competition and customer churn, and as a result have continued to innovate and offer new value-added services in an effort to both win and retain customers. The efforts undertaken by the carriers often required equipment manufacturers to introduce new infrastructure hardware capable of supporting new features and services. At the same time, the new equipment needed to communicate with the network management systems already in place and used to ensure uptime and quality of service.
