Vitesse Reduces Power by 30% with Gigabit Ethernet Desktop System

5/12/2004 - Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Nasdaq: VTSS) extended its leadership position in the Gigabit Ethernet market with the introduction of a Gigabit Ethernet desktop system solution that reduces power by 30%. The system consists of Vitesse’s new 16-port Gigabit Switch IC, Heathrow-III, and its companion sub-500mW copper transceiver. OEMs and ODMs directly benefit by designing boards with extremely small form factors, which eliminates the need for costly power supplies and cooling fans, and significantly lowers their overall system costs.

Vitesse is the only Gigabit Switch System supplier providing the industry with less than 900mW per port power consumption in a complete switch and copper PHY solution ranging from 8- to 48-ports. By pairing Heathrow-III (VSC7302) with the industry’s first sub-500mW copper transceiver (VSC8224/44), small to medium business (SMB) and desktop system power consumption is reduced by 30%.

Vitesse Gigabit Switch Systems are optimized to support the migration of 10/100 Local Area Networking (LAN) switch equipment to triple speed (10/100/1000) Gigabit. In-Stat/MDR projects that 2004 will be a key year for the deployment of Gigabit Ethernet by U.S. businesses. According to the high-tech market research firm, most vendors cite the rapid drop in Gigabit Ethernet ASPs, and the growing inclusion of Gigabit Ethernet connectivity in business PCs by PC OEMs as the key drivers for the growth in Gigabit Ethernet shipments.1

“With the recent acquisition of Cicada Semiconductor and their market leading copper PHYs, Vitesse now has the ability to provide all the major silicon components in today’s most commonly used SMB and enterprise desktop switch system at a competitive price,” said Jesper Knudsen, marketing director of Vitesse’s SMB Gigabit Ethernet Switch ICs. “Our Gigabit Switch Solutions dissipate less overall power than what the competition provides with their PHYs alone.”

Designing with Heathrow-III Speeds Time-to-Market
Heathrow-III is a volume production release of Vitesse’s third generation 16-port Gigabit Ethernet switch. It reduces development costs and achieves faster time-to-market for OEMs and ODMs by allowing them to develop a single printed circuit board for both 16- and 24-port configurations, and by being pin compatible with Vitesse’s 24-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch (StaplefordTM).

To further expedite board designs, Heathrow-III includes a complete web-managed reference system solution targeted at the SMB and enterprise switch market. The reference platform is optimized for low cost, 4-layer printed circuit boards. Web-Lite management is provided at a significantly lower cost than competing solutions by means of an Intel compatible 8051 controller. Complete systems software, user manuals, and other supporting documentation are provided for rapid design and validation.

Vitesse’s Gigabit Switch Solution (switch and PHY) is available at a per port cost of $5.00 USD in volume. Vitesse is demonstrating its Gigabit Ethernet product portfolio during Networld+Interop 2004 in Las Vegas, May 11 – 13, 2004.

Heathrow-III Specifications:

Vitesse’s LondonTM Family of Gigabit Ethernet Switches
Heathrow-III is a member of Vitesse’s London family of Gigabit Ethernet switches, which are designed to yield Gigabit wire-speed performance at extremely competitive prices. A common architecture provides ease-of-use and reusability of software across the entire family (from 8- to 48-ports). Multi-tier software options range from complete unmanaged, Web-Lite managed, up to fully managed enterprise class switches. Additionally, all family members use industry standard interfaces allowing OEMs and ODMs to take full advantage of the market leading copper and fiber PHYs from Vitesse. Heathrow-III joins ElstreeTM, StanstedTM, StaplefordTM, GatwickTM, and FairoaksTM.
