5/11/2004 - IDTTM (Integrated Device Technology, Inc.; Nasdaq: IDTI), a leading communications IC company, introduced the industry’s first family of tri-port devices, underscoring the company’s leadership in multi-port technology. Enabling simultaneous access to the memory for three device ports, the IDT tri-port products provide a high-speed, bi-directional interface between three intelligent devices, such as an applications or baseband processor, digital multimedia broadcast (DMB) processor and an 802.11 processor. With the new tri-port family, IDT is better positioned to address emerging high-end handset applications where integrated voice-, multimedia- and data-processing are becoming the paradigm. The innovative packaging, very low power and high performance benefits of these devices make them well suited for space-sensitive, power-conscious applications, such as next-generation, high-end wireless handsets that feature support for non-cellular wireless data connections, including Wi-Fi and DMB standards. Especially in Asia Pacific, satellite DMB technology is in the spotlight as the next-generation mobile broadcasting formats. The service will be accessible anywhere via receivers in either automobiles or handheld terminals.
“Developing high-performance, multimedia and multimode wireless handsets while reducing power consumption poses a unique challenge for designers,” said Ronald Jew, director of product management for the IDT multi-port products. “Building on our 20-year tenure in multi-port design to develop the new tri-port family, as well as the 1.8-volt dual-port family we announced in February of this year, we are providing customers with a new breed of memory devices that address the performance bottleneck existing in many next-generation mobile applications. This product introduction represents a continuation of our efforts to address the terminal portion of the wireless communications market as well as a proof point of our ability to provide customers with products that meet their robust performance and feature set requirements.”
The new tri-port family includes three members. The 70V525M and 70P525M feature 3.0-volt and 1.8-volt core and I/O operation, respectively. The third family member, the 70P5258M, supports 3.3/3.0/2.5 and 1.8-volt I/O voltages on the three ports with a 1.8-volt core. All of the voltage options are pin-compatible with one another, giving designers the necessary functionality to support highly modular devices, ultimately minimizing design cycles and shortening time to market, thereby maximizing return on investment. Further, this functionality enables designers to use the IDT tri-port devices to interface with a wide variety of current and future applications and baseband processors of different voltages without using additional voltage translators. Engineered with a low operating and standby current, the tri-port products typically operate on 54 mW of power and with standby power mode of 7.2 µW.
As with traditional IDT dual-port devices, the new family includes interrupt functionality, which can be used to pass software flags between the different devices in the system, making them particularly useful when setting up “ping-pong” memory accesses between the different ports. The devices are available in a 7 mm x 7 mm, 0.5 mm-pitch ball grid array.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing for the tri-port devices is $4.55 in 500K-unit quantities. The products are sampling now, with production quantities available in Q3CY04. IBIS and hardware simulation models are also available for the new devices. Click here for more information about these and other IDT multi-port products.
