Sun Systems, NMS Deliver Karaoke Service to DTAC Wireless Subscribers

5/11/2004 - NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS) announced that mobile operator DTAC's mobile karaoke service has been deployed by Sun Systems on a foundation of NMS Open AccessTM technology. DTAC's service will support 7 million mobile subscribers and is the first mobile karaoke service on the market with full "recording studio" features.

With DTAC's mobile karaoke service, customers can have access to a music station simply by dialing *111. Customers can then choose from the latest hit songs by top performers, or can record and mix their own karaoke performances. Users can also dedicate their songs and forward them to any mobile phone, specifying the date and time of message delivery. Customers are notified via SMS once their personalized song has been delivered.

A recent study by IDC indicates that new lower priced Thai language-enabled handsets, nationwide coverage and changes in lifestyle perceptions that make having a cell phone fashionable are all drivers of a mobile services market in Thailand that will have strong double digit growth over the next few years. To capture share of this growth and enhance revenues, operators are aggressively promoting entertainment services like ringback tones and the new karaoke offering from DTAC.

"Sun Systems provides carriers with the technology they require to offer innovative services to customers," said Natapong Jatabut, general manager, Sun Systems. "NMS' record of providing feature-rich hardware and software building blocks, and our positive prior experiences working with NMS, made them a natural choice for the DTAC mobile karaoke deployment. With NMS, we have consistently had the technology and the support to get our customers' services up and running quickly and easily."

NMS Open AccessTM communications building blocks for the mobile karaoke service include the CG Series scalable, high-performance hardware and software optimized for IP-based communications and the TX series SS7 data communications platform. The NMS CGTM Series provides high-density digital trunk interfaces combined with digital signal processing (DSP) resources for signaling and echo cancellation, which saves valuable space in the large, high-availability environments of service providers.

NMS' TXTM Series, also in a space-saving form factor, is one of a family of innovative, high-performance data communications platforms from NMS that support SS7 call control applications with a set of switch-specific and high availability extensions that meet service provider requirements and facilitate worldwide deployments and interoperability. SS7 is often used as the signaling protocol for voice over IP gateway applications and enhanced messaging services, including one-number/follow-me, chat and conferencing.
