Marvell Targets Home Wi-Fi Networks with Embedded LiveAP Technology

5/7/2004 - Marvell® (NASDAQ: MRVL), a technology leader in the development of extreme broadband communications and storage solutions, announced the availability of LiveAPTM, a new embedded wireless Access Point (AP) technology. LiveAP will enable desktop PCs, Media Center PCs, gaming consoles and emerging home gateway devices to offer complete on-demand Internet connectivity and a secure home wireless network.

The key advantage of LiveAP is the “on-demand” feature, which means that regardless of whether the host device is on or off the AP remains active. Traditional technologies, such as Soft AP, require the host device to be turned on in order for the wireless APs to be active. However, most users are accustomed to turning off their PC or other host devices when they are not in use, which renders not only the home wireless network inaccessible but the Internet connection as well. This limitation defeats the ease-of use and sense of freedom commonly associated with wireless products. LiveAP solves this limitation by offering continuous operation regardless of whether the host device is on or off. This is important as users expect their home wireless networks to deliver audio, video and voice - seamlessly and instantly.

"Entertainment-centric home networks will build on the technology provided in data-centric home networks--using and adapting the technology to the requirements of entertainment-centric applications," according to Joseph Byrne, Gartner Analyst. "These entertainment networks are what will drive the demand for WLANs in home networking. WLAN suppliers serve to benefit not only themselves but their customers as well by recognizing and adapting products for this trend.”

“User needs and increased WLAN applications are driving our customers to look for new ways to enhance and expand the role of WLAN in the home,” said Dr. James Chen, Marvell Product Marketing Manager for WLAN. “Marvell is answering this demand by developing new ways of embedding WLAN technology in creative and innovative products, and addressing real user issues like security.”

LiveAP, a patent pending technology, uses an extremely low-power design that can utilize the “standby” current from the host device to remain fully active even when the device is off. LiveAP also supports the latest wireless security standards, such as WPA, WPA2, and 802.11i AES security extensions, for ensuring home networks are secure and tamper-resistant. In addition, LiveAP supports the latest Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities as defined in the upcoming IEEE 802.11e standard for high quality, robust home networks.

Availability and Pricing
Marvell will be demonstrating the LiveAP technology at the Networld+Interop Show, in Las Vegas, May 11-13, 2004. Customers interested in seeing the demonstration should contact Marvell to schedule a time. The reference design for LiveAP will be available in the second half of the year.
